Wailea News and Upcoming Events

Each town on Maui has its day, but 2014 is turning out to be the Year of Wailea.

The swanky Andaz Maui at Wailea was just named one of the ‘Best New Hotels in the World’ – one of only 33 to make the 2014 Hot List by Conde Nast Traveler.

The restaurants in Wailea racked up a number of awards at the recent Maui no ka oi Magazine’s Aipono Awards, with Kaana Kitchen (at the Andaz) winning Best New Restaurant, Capische? awarded Most Romantic and Nick’s Fish Market earning Best Service.

Speaking of Capische?, The Market by Capische is now open at Wailea Gateway Center.  The Market has an extensive selection of wine, prepared foods, fresh produce, gourmet desserts, coffees and much more! Follow them on Facebook and Instagram.  (scroll down to bottom for even more pics of this visually and gastronomically stunning gourmet deli!)

panties in paradise maui wailea hawaii Also coming soon to Wailea Gateway, Nadia Toraman, one of Maui’s most popular yoga instructors, will be opening a new yoga studio in May (at the current Lululemon, which is moving to Whaler’s Village). Wailea Gateway is home to two Maui Made favorites already, Otaheite and Sweet Paradise Chocolatier. We appreciate that these shops are truly geared towards both locals and visitors. Maui Zen Day Spa has closed their Wailea location (they are open in Lahaina).  Spa Maui Wailea has opened in its place!  A new lingerie shop, Panties in Paradise, is opening soon, and my Wailea insider promises even more exciting retailers to come!

As a sidebar, I was unable to find a current list of Wailea Gateway merchants, so if you are also wondering what is there – here’s the list:

Building A : Fabiani’s (with sister location in Kihei), Destination Resorts, Kai Kanani, Panties in Paradise, Sweet Paradise Chocolatier, Pita Paradise (also has sister location in Kihei), Old Republic Title, Wells Fargo, Coldwell Banker, and opening next month – Yoga Shala

Building B: Postal and Office, Subway, Maui Memories, Otheite, Jere Fine Jewelers, The Market by Capische, and Monkeypod Kitchen.

And if you are looking for retail space in this desirable location, there’s only one space left, a 1073sf on the second floor, as there’s already a lease pending on the last ground floor space! (click for more info

And speaking of awesome restaurants, returning this May is the popular Wailea Restaurant Week, happening May 25-31. Participating restaurants create a three course, pre-fixe menu for just $29*, $39* or $49* per person (*depending on the restaurant – beverages, tax and gratuity not included).  Some restaurants have enhanced this promotion with optional wine pairings.  Restaurant Week Wailea is also a fundraiser for the Maui Food Bank. This is a hugely popular event, go ahead and make your reservations NOW!   For an example menu – click to see what they are offering at Alan Wong’s Amasia at the Grand Wailea, the 2013 winner of the Aipono Best New Restaurant!

Wailea is also soon to be abuzz with film lovers, celebrities and anyone looking for a great time! The 2014 Maui Film Festival takes place this year June 4-8, and the preliminary schedule and event passes are now available online, with the schedule of film premieres and honored celebrities soon to come!

And now for the exciting part: Photos from The Market by Capische?!

Target: I’m just posting this on Target’s opening day, March 4, 2015, so I have NO IDEA what they have in stock (or what they may be out of in a matter of days) – but I’m guessing they have all the baby basics, probably some organic options, and maybe some furniture and gear!  Target is located in Kahului/Puunene, just behind the Walmart.

Carters:  Opened in late 2013 at The Outlets of Maui in Lahaina .  According to the website, “Carter’s is the leading brand of children’s clothing, gifts and accessories in America.” – Maui Made Note: Unfortunately, as a national brand, when I visited just before Christmas, the clothes were mostly ‘seasonal’ – thick winter pajamas and long sleeves, the only bathing suits were for babies (I was looking for girls).

Macy’s:  I forgot about this store in the original post, but the children’s Macy’s in Queen Kaahumanu Center has decent children’s clothes and a couple miscellaneous gift items – They seem to do a better job of carrying Hawaii appropriate clothing. but I don’t believe they have shoes. Luckily there are lots of shoe stores in the Mall, including Payless Shoe Source and Parade of Shoes.

Walmart – pretty much has everything here for baby:  Cribs, strollers, car seats, clothes, food, etc.  I’m pretty sure they stock nursing bras, but don’t recall if they had maternity clothes there.

Costco – Ofter have baby and kids clothes, you can usually find some cute PJ and romper sets by Carters, and swimwear.  Best place to get diapers – also carry formula.  Occasionally have things like car seats.

Sears – This is another place to check for cribs, strollers, nursery items (things like monitors, etc), baby and kids clothes.

Ross – Good place to get baby and kids clothes, though you’ll probably have to go often if you are looking for something in particular.  Seemingly always carry essentials like blankets and towels (good place to go for baby shower gifts- you can fill a whole basket and not break the bank!) They sometime carry random things (its Ross) – today they had breast pumps.  I’ve also seen car seats, umbrella strollers, etc.  Usually have a decent selection of baby and kids toys.  Also has a small isle for maternity clothes.

Old Navy – Also has a small selection of maternity clothes.   (best online shopping hint: if you buy it online from oldnavy.com and it doesn’t fit, you can return it to the store!) Always has baby and kids clothes, and great sales.

Gap  – The Gap at the Shops at Wailea  carries Gap (women’s), Gapbody, and Baby Gap.  NEW 2014 Update: Kids clothes seen at The Outlets of Maui (Lahaina) Gap.

Blue Ginger–  colorful batik ‘resortwear’ – with lots of kids and baby clothes and blankets – your best bet to find cute (and comfortable) mommy and me/whole family matching outfits… if that’s really what you are looking for… numerous locations around the island.

Maui Ocean Center Store  – (Update: Now the store has an ONLINE shop!) The gift shop at the aquarium (FREE entry to store – just check in at front gate) has a large section just for kids, with all kinds of educational games and toys (not just marine-related), a whole kids book section with lots of Hawaii-themed books, and of course aquarium-related t-shirts and stuffed animals.  Last time I was there, they also had lots of really high-quality baby toys as well.  And the perennial children’s favorite – the glow in the dark cave!  with all kinds of glow in the dark and light up toys.  They also have a big selection of locally made soaps, lotions and body products, like reef-safe sunscreen.  It’s also one of the few places on island to find the ‘i-play’ kids sunshirts and suits, rash guards, and reusable swim diapers and hats.  There’s discounts for Kama’aina and members.

Perfection Bra Fitting – in Wailuku. Nursing bras.  Get sized by appointment.  Its worth it.  And you’ll want to go back after your are done breastfeeding since your boobs will just never be the same…

Valley Isle Childbirth Education – Nancy (who also does childbirth and childcare classes) sells Medela breastpumps, parts and supplies, plus a ton of awesome other stuff, and she’ll even show you how to use them. I’m not sure if this is still the case, but she even delivered to my house after my daughter was born.

And, for more ‘baby shower’ and just plain cute baby stuff, you can head upcountry to Makawao and check out Designing Wahine and Oh, Baby!, and head to Paia and peruse Nuage Bleu for cute clothes, and Lilikoi Beauty (baby lotions/swaddlers, etc at last check!)

Keiki Collections: Looking for quality wood children’s furniture on Maui? Keiki Collections has a workshop/storefront on Wili Pa Loop in Wailuku and you can see lots of great examples (they do custom orders!) online!

And Maui-based Online Stores:

Upcountry Farmers Market – Pukalani, Maui

Upcountry Farmer's Market Maui Pukalani After attending the Maui Swap Meet last Saturday, the Upcountry Farmer’s Market, near the Long’s in Pukalani, was quite literally, a refreshing experience (and by this, I mean it’s cooler.  It’s also smaller, so it’s easier to quickly get in and out with two kids).   While it’s not exactly fair to compare a ‘swap meet’ and a ‘farmers market’, here are my unscientific, rushing through with two kids comparisons.

The Maui Swap Meet, located in Kahului at the UH Maui College, is large, with a bit of everything, from produce stands to soaps, jams and jellies, shave ice, food trucks, art, clothes and trinkets.  There’s pretty much something for everyone, whether it’s 2/$5 necklaces for your 5 year old daughter, or really nice jewelry for your mother’s birthday. There are some excellent crafters and items, if you have time to peruse all the booths.  The admission fee is reasonable (50 cents), and there’s ample parking, but it can be quite hot and sunny (bring a hat and water – or, you can buy them of course!)

We attended Upcountry Farmer’s Market yesterday, on the market’s third anniversary, which was our first experience, so while the regulars found it a bit busy, we didn’t have a hard time finding parking, and the crowds weren’t too bad to easily peruse all the items and chat with the sellers.  Its a much smaller market (i have no idea how many were at either, but I’d estimate 30-ish upcountry, with over 100 at the swap meet) with a nice variety of produce (each seemed clearly labeled with ‘organic, pesticide-free or conventional), herbs, plants and flowers, food, fresh fish (whole and filleted- sold by the actual fisherman), and a limited selection of gifts and crafts.  It was much also cooler upcountry, with just enough cloud cover and a light breeze to keep it very comfortable.  Here were some of the day’s finds:

A Farm Stand by Roots + Wings

A Selection of baked goods, including gluten-free options and some truly delicious bakalava by Lilia Biniaris

Vegan Cupcakes by Baked by Amy, who alternates between the two Saturday Markets, so check out her Facebook page to find these yummy treats:

Cupcakes by Baked by Amy – vegan with gluten-free options

and a whole host of other fun stuff:

One more delicious find was the fruit candies by Maui Fruit Jewels, which has a great website and online shop, and an interesting enough story that they may get one of their own posts!  Check it out and let me know what you think.
