Valentine’s Gift Suggestion #1- Awili Spa at Andaz

Let’s just say you have a lovely wife, with two kids, who could use a little pampering and quiet time.  I’m about to make your wife (and life) very happy.  Present her with a day at the Awili Spa at the new Andaz hotel in Wailea for Valentine’s Day.   From the friendly greeting by the complementary valet, to the dramatic, but simple entry and non-lobby lobby, your princess will feel like a real princess.  (I wish I had fancier words to describe how wonderful the Andaz is, but all I can say is this – just go.  Even to just walk around, grab a drink at the poolside Lehua Lounge during sunset, or enjoy a full meal at one of their several spectacular restaurants).

Entry to Heaven… The Andaz Maui at Wailea

An unexpected little room in the hotel ‘lobby’ – a zen garden with a sand floor!

Back to the Valentine’s gift – included with treatments at the spa is access to the sauna, steam room and hot tub in the spa area, snacks (which are worth staying for alone) in the spa’s lounges, and access to the adult-only tranquility pool.  I had the good fortune to be able to get a massage at the spa recently, and the whole experience is so magical, that while being shown around the spa area, my guests and I kept giggling at our disbelief that we could spend the whole day there… ( “we close at 8pm, so you can stay until 7:59” we were told with a smile, we giggled again).   The hot tub room (with steam room, sauna, and very well appointed showers and locker room) is just a really relaxing area on its own, I can only describe as modern and zen-like.  The massage was one of the best I’ve ever had.   The entrance to the spa is also a fun area, you are surrounded by hundreds of drawers of herbs and other magical ingredients for the apothecary consultants to brew up cures for whatever ails you.

Also in the entry/apothecary room is an unexpected boutique filled with designs from Maui’s top clothing and fashion designers, including clothing by Maggie Coulumbe and jewelry by Debbie Mack and Sophie Grace.  This spot is worth a stop just for the shopping.

Sadly, though we were not able to stay until 7:59 (due to one daddy staying at home with all four children) – we did have time to enjoy a delicious meal at the Lehua Lounge, with a stunning view of the humpbacks breaching in the ocean.  A momentous end to a thoroughly  relaxing day.

Stay Eazy at the Andaz

Guest Post: by Sally Warrick (my mom)

Last night we went to Andaz Maui at Wailea, and it was beautiful and amazing.  We arrived at sunset and were looking out over the balcony at the many pools below and directly below us was a lovely looking bar with the sunset view so we decided to go down and have a drink and watch the rest of the sunset.

Andaz Maui Wailea Pools Sunset Night

Andaz Maui at Wailea – Pools Just after sunset (from earlier this year)

Wonderful chairs, little fire pits, candles and a beautiful waitress named Simone.  We asked Simone where she was from and she said San Diego, and she has just arrived not too long ago.  We told her we had lived in Bonita and we bonded.  About this time a couple of guys showed up to do a gig – may I add that where the ‘stage’ was placed was perfection.  I think they must have designed the space to have entertainment but make it subtle and not intrusive just background music -if you wanted.  It was perfect, they were playing, we were chatting and looking out at the view.  And then we discovered they they were doing a piece we knew and -very well.  And then we started paying attention to them.  Simone told us that they were her favorite group that played there.  This was only their second time, but they are contracted now to play at what is known as the Lehua Lounge every Saturday night.

They came over to our table after their set (at Simone’s request).  They were respectful, sweet and well spoken, and they are from Kihei and went to Baldwin and Maui High, been playing together for 9 years and they are about 22.  They were fun to talk with and I think they appreciated the fact that we knew a little something about Hawaiian Music.
The group name is Stay Eazy it was Gabriel  and Austin, they have a Facebook page for the group.  I highly recommend this trip, we loved it.

Funnily enough we parked at the Wailea Shoppes and walked back to Andaz and as it turned out it was not a bad choice -the valet parking was backed way up- well, what do you expect on a Saturday night at 6 during Christmas week?

Mahalo to Sally for our first ever Guest Post!

Andaz Maui Features Padilla Designs Restoration

Maui Sculpture at Andaz Maui at Wailea

This past Labor Day weekend was a three-day holiday for many on Maui, but not for the employees of the just-opened Andaz Maui at Wailea.   The hotel, which is Hawaii’s first LEED-certified resort, has 297 guest rooms and suites, including seven villas with two to four bedrooms.  The resort will eventually feature two full-service restaurants: Ka’ana Kitchen, which is already open, and Morimoto Maui, by Iron Chef Masaharu Morimoto. The resort is located at the site of the former Renaissance Wailea Beach Resort, which closed in 2007.

Originally done by an artist in the late 1970‘s, the piece was going to be recycled, as it was in pretty bad shape after sitting on the oceanfront lawn of the Stouffers Hotel for the last 30 years.  Kainoa Horcajo, the Cultural Director for the Andaz, called on the master metal smiths at Padilla Designs to bring the statue back to life, and set about the task of finding a fitting new home for the 9 foot, 1200 pound sculpture.

Padilla Designs rebuilt the hands and feet out of steel plate, sculpted a new Lei Poo around his for head out of hundreds of hand cut copper maile leafs. They also created a copper fish hook embedded in a natural lava rock as well as a sculpted copper rope link it all together.  The entire statue was then highlighted and clear coated to bring out the saturation.   Kaleo Padilla of Padilla Designs is “thrilled to see Maui resurrected to live another lifetime at the front entrance to the luxury Andaz Maui at Wailea.”

Kainoa Horcajo shared his thoughts on the statue of Maui and “my hopes for its use and integration into a larger, place-appropriate, totally Andaz front art piece:

Maui the demi-god, often called Mauiakalana, Mauiakamalo, and Mauiakamai, is the progenitor of humanity in these islands.  He is the archetypal ancestor and the embodiment of positive, uplifting values that place the good of the community over the desires of the individual.  Maui slowed the sun, lifted the sky, obtained the secret of fire, and raised the islands from the ocean.  It is this deed of raising the island from the ocean that we want to honor and highlight.

Early on in the process of creating the Andaz Maui at Wailea, the general manager Michael Stephens called me about working on a project to create a fictional story about a Japanese man that sailed across the sea and landed on the beach fronting our resort in a past time.  This man, Hyato, fell in love with a Hawaiian woman and together they created a family and built a home for them and their friends.  This home they built is the Andaz Maui at Wailea.  We used the story and the elements of it to inform bits of our design, our hiring process, and many of the details of the resort.  The characters are built around Andaz values and Hawaiian values and help us better understand who we are and why we do what we do.

Just as our mythical ancestor Hyato raised the islands from the sea by traveling Eastward into the rising sun and landing on Mokapu beach, we envision this property and building as our home that was created to house our ever-growing family.”
