Putting the Juice in Jamba Juice

maui juiceIt seems everyone on Maui is jumping on the juicing and acai bowl (my new favorite!) trend, and Jamba Juice – at least on Maui –  is no exception.  In January, Jamba Juice Hawaii started offering freshly squeezed fruit and vegetable juices at all of their Maui locations, with expansion plans to the rest of the islands in June.  Since I’m now a celebrity blogger (whatever, just go with it), I received an invitation to sample the new juices, and when I arrived I was impressed to see all the new selections on the menu.  (It’s been a while since I’ve been in a Jamba Juice – we have a Vita-Mix and make smoothies at home.)  They now have sandwiches, acai bowls, and of course, the new juice menu.  And everything comes with a guarantee- if you don’t like it, they’ll give you something else.  This is a great option if you are new to juicing and aren’t sure if you really enjoy kale mingling with your pineapple juice…  But when I went in for my sampling, according to Jen, the manager of the Maui Marketplace location, no one has returned their juice yet! In my expert opinion, the recipes seemed pretty spot on.

Newest fresh-squeezed juice varieties include:

·         Citrus Kick – orange, apple, pineapple, ginger
·         Tropical Greens – super greens, apple, pineapple, chia
·         Veggie Harvest – beet, carrot, super greens, apple, ginger
·         Garden Medley – super greens, carrot, apple, chia
·         Carrot Cayenne – carrot, apple, ginger, cayenne
·         Orange Reviver – orange, beet, banana, apple, chia

The juices can be found at all four Maui Jamba Juice Hawaii locations (Queen Kaahumanu Center, Old Lahaina Center, Piilani Village, and Maui Marketplace).  Juices are $6.39 for a 12 oz or $7.39 for a 16 oz (at the time of sampling, subject to change, of course)

They would also be stoked if you would share your best juice photos on FB, Twitter, or Instagram at @jambahawaii.

If you’ve been on Maui for any length of time, you know that we have our share of world-class athletes, from world-champion windsurfers and stand-up paddlers to Olympic skiers who live and train on Maui in the off-season.  For a while now, some of Maui’s top athletes have been turning to Tugger Balcom for their performance enhancing beverages.  Now, we’re not talking about some secret formula of artificial chemicals or banned substances, these are real, natural ingredients, formulated specifically for athletes for pre- or post-workout.

Outdoor seating at the Club… no need to wipe the sand off your feet!

And because of some ‘obstacles’ recently created by the government in regards to selling ‘raw’ beverages through wholesale, Tugger decided to open up a juice bar in Paia to sell his ever expanding line of juices, coffee and ‘fuel’ for athletes (and, the rest of us, too).  So now, whether you have just finished your CrossFit or barre class, you are training for your Maui to Molokai run, or you are just headed to the office, you can come grab some fuel at Paia’s newest hot spot, the Sporting Club of the Pacific.  Plus, the seating is outdoors so you don’t even need to wipe the sweat off your brow or the sand off your feet.  You might even get to run elbows with some of these world-class athletes…

Tugger’s entry into the performance beverage world began with his own struggle with severe psoriasis.  After eliminating sugar, dairy and eggs from his diet, and seeing success with that change, he started moving away from drinks with artificial ingredients and towards more natural sources of hydration and energy.  Simultaneously, Tugger took a course in free diving, and learned about using chlorophyll as a means to be able to hold your breath for longer periods of time.  (And if you want to know more about how this works, you should probably go talk to Tugger).

After getting positive feedback from big-wave surfers and free divers from his first round of bottled juices, Tugger began wholesaling.  Alive and Well, Choice and the Kuau Store were selling out each week, but a new law forbidding the sale of raw juice changed his focus, just as the space behind Puka Puka in Paia (the former Paia Bay Coffee) opened up.

His initial line of two drinks- a pineapple and chlorophyll juice and cold-pressed coffee – has expanded (and is still expanding daily) to : three types of Hydration drinks, four Fresh Juices, Strong Coffee, Wellness Shots, Blended Beverages and Acai and Green bowls.  (Menu printed at bottom)

The story behind the name and the brand, Sporting Club of the Pacific, is probably a whole separate blog post, so I’ll just say that Tugger has assembled a group of world-class artisans from around the Pacific, blacksmiths, speargun makers, surfboard shapers, and more, into a kind-of artists co-op (and again, talk to Tugger if you want to learn more about this, or visit the website).  Because the brand is based on custom-made equipment for high-performance, his juices naturally fit into this project as well.

As much as possible I try to blog about personal experiences, so I ventured into the Sporting Club of the Pacific (although I apparently ‘just missed’ about a half-dozen sports superstars who had visited that morning) and its clear that Tugger’s his enthusiasm for quality, researched ingredients is evident in his products.  The acai bowl was delicious (luckily it was cleared away before I was tempted to lick the bottom), each of the juices were pure tasting, and not too sweet or overpowering as some juices can be, and the coffee was excellent as well, although I now need to go back and try it with the house-made coconut cream.

Secret Service

Dazoo Restaurant and Pau Vodka Serve up the Fun!

Dazoo Restaurant is Maui’s best kept secret for hand-crafted cocktails, but with bloggers like ‘EZdrinking’ discovering this Paia restaurant and spreading the word, the secret is soon to be out.

Dazoo is gaining attention for their creative cocktails using fresh squeezed, locally sourced juices and Maui made liquors. This month, they are launching Pau Vodka Night, on Wednesday, July 16, from 5-7pm.

On the third Wednesday of each month, Dazoo’s talented team of bartenders, lead by Jimmy Shoemaker, will create four new cocktails featuring Pau Vodka (crafted using Maui pineapples just up the road in Haliimaile) and other local ingredients.

Pau Vodka’s master distiller Mark Nigbur will also be at the event, to answer questions and entertain the crowds!

I was invited to sample and photograph the cocktails (its a rough job, but someone has to do it!) to help promote the upcoming event, and all I can say is I’ve already made my reservations (and you should too!).

In July, the featured cocktails will be:

Wow Wow Lemonade – Local and Fresh!

Update 9/10/15- The wow wow lemonade stand in Kahului is temporarily closed (according to the website) but click here to see where you can find the lemonade around Maui and Oahu

Every day after school the carpool kids pile into my minivan and announce that they are hungry.  I have a couple of standby treats, but yesterday I was craving something different… something cool and refreshing – and to be honest, ever since I saw someone walking around town with a big mason jar, filled with the most delicious looking juice, with the words ‘no ka oi’ emblazoned on the side, I’ve been craving Wow Wow Lemonade.

lemonade mason jar sun maui hawaii

Doesn’t this make you thirsty?

Now here’s the strange part – I’d never even tried it before.  But I’ve been following them on Facebook for a while, and the combination of local, freshly hand-squeezed juice, plus a classic mason jar in a limited edition design, was just more than I could resist.  So I brought my kids down to do some product testing, and I also used them as models. They even took some pictures.  As recommended by the very friendly staff, the strawberry lemonade with just a touch of mint was a hit!  But I can’t wait to bring my mason jar back for more!

Once the lemonade was kid-approved, we checked in with Todd of Wow Wow Lemonade who so kindly answered a few of our questions…

Maui Made: When did Wow Wow Lemonade open?

Todd: We opened our lemonade business in Hawaii about 2 years ago. We started in local farmer’s markets, and we do the Wailuku 1st Friday and Kihei 4th Friday, and then we opened up our lemonade stand (at 415 Dairy Road in Kahului – adjacent to Hawaiian Island Surf Sport and across the street from Kmart) in September 2013.  We have also expanded to Oahu and have partnered with Maui born and raised native, Kawika Drummond, to expand our lemonade business on Oahu.

MM: What was the inspiration?

Todd: We started the business a few years ago, after going through a loss of one of our children. Our family wanted to start a business where we could spend more time with each other, and with the people in our community.  We have always been very inspired by creating a sustainable, organic lifestyle, that is centered around supporting other farmers and suppliers in our community.  We wanted to make a gourmet lemonade stand that was fun for kids and grown ups alike.

MM: Where do you get your produce?

Todd: We buy as much produce as we can from local farmers and growers. We get the majority of our lemons from Hana, Makawao, and Kula from small family farms or growers. Other lemons often come from individual families that have a few trees, and they drop them by our stand.  Our Tahitian limes come from a grower in Haiku. Our Lavender comes from the lavender farm upcountry.  Strawberries come from the Kula strawberry farm.  We get our sugar from the Maui sugar mill, and we get most of our other fruits from small farmers in Kula.  Some of the herbs and smaller fruits we also grow ourselves. Many of the growers just drop the fruits off at the stand, and we prepare it in our commercial kitchen.

MM: What’s the best part of doing business on Maui?

Todd: We love the people, and we love working with the local farmers and suppliers. There is so much kindness and the people are so filled with the aloha of Hawaii.  We love doing business with people in the community on a personal basis, where we know our growers, and where our fruit comes from. The growers have become our friends, and it becomes more about good relationships than just doing business.

MM: I love the mason jars, its great branding and the designs are really cute.  Where did that idea come from?

Todd: I got the idea for mason jar lemonades from my wife, who grew up on a farm.  They always drank lemonade from a mason jar.  I used to work in the clothing industry, and I used a grommet press for clothing grommets, so I decided to try the grommet press on the mason jar lids so people could put their straws in them.

MM: Will you be offering different limited edition designs in the future?

Todd: Yes, we are working on a couple of new limited jars after the ‘No Ka ‘Oi’ jar  that will be released soon. Stay tuned….

maui bottled lemonade maui on mauiMM: What’s next for Wow Wow Lemonade?

Todd: We are opening up another Lemonade stand in the next month. We haven’t announced the location yet, but will let you know shortly!  We are also expanding our distribution of our bottled lemonades through local retail accounts and food trucks. Maui Fresh Streatery truck is selling our lemonades, as well as, Da Local Banana, Maui Greens market, and other small grocery stores.

MM: Do you have a kama’aina discount?

Todd: We offer a kama’aina discount of $1 off all new lemonade drinks.  We also offer refills on any mason jar for $5.

Todd: We often have special offers throughout the month on refills, new drinks, and specials, so stay tuned to our instagram (@wowwowlemonde) for more good deals.

Bring Home a Jar of Maui – Maui Preserved

Maui Preserved was started by two chefs, transplanted from New York City, with the goal to take Maui’s height of season produce and crafting pantry items to make the harvests last.  The company was launched in June 2010 by Maleta Van Loan and Anthony LaBua, with the goal of creating products and flavors that are both traditional and extraordinary.  Their products range from pickles and hot sauce to jams, syrups, whole vanilla beans, and more!  In the June 2013 issue of Sunset Magazine, Maui Preserved’s Sweet and Spicy Pineapple was featured in the article ‘100 New Reasons to Love the West’.  Maleta LaBua, owner and operator of Maui Preserved, tells us how that mention came about, and shares a bit more about her sweet company.

Sweet Spicy Pineapple Sunset Magazine

The Sweet and Spicy Pineapple is one of the Reasons to Love the West

Maui Made: How did the write up in Sunset Magazine happen?

Maleta LaBua: Our press really comes about from someone from a magazine tasting our products that are either gifted to them or they pick up at one of the many events we participate in, farmer’s markets or state-wide retailers.  All of our printed press was local until this article.  It’s important to get your product out there because sometimes one person can make a big difference in sales. We always make sure to stay connected with writers who support us.

MM: Did that increase sales for you?

MB: Yes, it increased online sales and of course increased our fan base for future sales as well.

Maui Preserved’s Pickled Beets make a unique and delicious burger topping

MM: What are your top selling products?

MB: Hot Hot Sauce, Vanilla Powder, Sweet & Spicy Pineapple, our Pickled Beets are up there as well.  We started selling Pickled Pohole Ferns this year and it is steadily growing in popularity!

MM: Are all your products online?

MB: Our selection depending on seasonality and availability.  We also offer seasonal gift packs.  Our retailers (currently on Maui, Kauai, Oahu and in New York) are listed on our website so customers have the option to visit a shop that carries Maui Preserved near them! Customers are always welcome to send us an email  if they can’t find one of their favorite products.  We provide excellent customer service and are always happy to help our fans out!

MM: What sets your product apart from others?

MB: I think it’s our intention.  Maui Preserved is deeply rooted in the idea that eating well and sustainably is also delicious.  Many customers keep telling us that our hot sauce is the best they have ever had.  I think that also comes from Maui Preserved’s ability to modernize the classic cuisine and ingredients of Hawaii.  There are so many climatic zones in Hawaii and we select the best ingredients from a region.  We work on a recipe until its a winner!  You can’t fake passion and we love to cook and most importantly eat!

MM: Any tips for someone starting a small business on Maui?

MB: Do your market research in regards to the local community versus the tourist community, and start with a solid business plan.  It’s a small pool of business owners as well and its vital to work together and support each other.

Maui Hot Hot Sauce Preserved Gift Idea

Maui Preserved’s Hot Hot Sauce is made with the local Hawaiian Chile Pepper

MM: What’s next for Maui Preserved?

MB: We are developing a co-packing side of the company which is really exciting because it furthers our mission to serve local food to as many people as possible and to continue to support our local farmers as much as we can.  This showcases our background as chefs and the skills and talent that we have worked hard to develop.

MM: Anything else you want to share?

MB: Maui Preserved was a way for two chefs to give back and contribute to the local food shed of Hawaii.  It is the community that keeps Maui Preserved thriving.  We just want to thank everyone who supports our business and allows us to do what we love!
