Thrift, Consignment and Second-Hand Shops on Maui

Update September 2017: New ‘Vintage / Unique’ Shop: CUT Market opening soon in Wailuku!

Update January 2016: Just saw this on Ask the Mayor and thought it was helpful:

Dear Mayor,

Q: I have a couple of car seats that my child has outgrown and I was wondering what I can do with them. Secondhand stores don’t take them and I don’t want them to go in the landfill. Mahalo.

A: You can take the car seats to Ka Hale A Ke Ola homeless shelter. They will accept them there. The shelter is located at 670 Waiale Road in Wailuku.

It seems like everyday a new thrift or consignment store is opening up, and another one is closing down. The only website that I can find with a complete listing of thrift shops on Maui is dated 2004, meaning its over ten years old, and of course, half of those places are closed.

So, here’s my list of thrift and consignment stores currently (to the best of my knowledge, and please send me or comment with updates) operating on Maui.   (There are a few second-hand furniture stores that are not on this list, but if you know of a GREAT one, let me know)

HUE – Voted Best New Business on Maui!

And the Winner for Best New Business is : HUE!  And now the readers of Maui Time Weekly’s popular “Best of Maui” poll know what everyone who’s already been in the store already knew: HUE is a gem.  HUE is a combination furniture store and interior design studio (the two owners are interior designers), but they also carry jewelry, gifts, art, body products, home accessories and more.  And they don’t just carry a little bit of everything, they carry the BEST of everything.

HUE furniture store “We describe our offerings as beach luxe: a bold blend of fun patterns, bright colors and trendy accessories that are perfect for a modern island lifestyle,” mentioned co-owner Jessica Guard McLellan.

The store also presents a rare opportunity for shoppers to view products typically only available through an interior designer. “We have fabrics, window treatments and other custom offerings available at the store that you can see, touch, and feel” continued her partner Wendy Takemoto.

According to Jessica, “our most popular small ticket items are the fun pillows, picture frames and the refillable soap dispensers from Caldrea. I think because they all have fun, modern prints and colors. We also do a lot in custom order with LEE Industries, our main upholstery line.”

l shaped couch sectional modern comfortable

Stylish couches, fun pillows, great gift ideas and home decor options…

As I write this, Wendy and Jessica are on a buying trip on the mainland – yay!  They shared some of their fun finds so far: “Here at market, we are finding new tabletops, throw rugs, and we are bringing in two lines of bedding, one of them organic out of North Carolina. We also found some cute cell phone cases, cotton rugs for the bathroom, Men’s and Childrens’ gifts, and lots of beautiful Christmas decor! We are hoping to really pack the store for the holidays.”

Upon entering HUE, you can tell that Wendy and Jessica are talented interior designers. The store is at once light, fresh and airy, yet filled with so many wonderful finds that you’ll want to stay for a while just to peruse all their offerings.  You may even want to take a break on the comfy looking bed couch.   HUE also seems to have exactly what you want, even if you don’t know exactly what that is.  And if they don’t, they’ll find it.  They regularly have shipments of new furniture and accessories coming in (which keeps their inventory always changing) and can special order just about anything for you.

And if you are looking for made on Maui products, you won’t be disappointed: a recent shopping research expedition revealed finds by blog favorite Pandeia (compass sundial wristwatches), Bluejane Maui (pillows), Kachi (jewelry), and Abigail Romanchak (art).

Interior design professional services include residential and commercial interior design, space planning, furniture sourcing, window treatment design and installation, kitchen and bath design, architectural computer renderings, custom upholstery, designer fabric selections, and more.  HUE offers appointments for design services as well as several different design packages, ideal for clients who desire a more personalized experience.

Where: HUE is located at 261 Lalo Street, Kahului, Maui, Hawaii

When: Open Monday – Friday from 9-5 and Saturdays from 10-4

Maui Made Treasures at Maui Ocean Center Store!

Maui Ocean Center Store Shop

For the last ten years I have shopped at one store for just about every birthday, shower and Christmas gift that I have purchased.  The gift shop at Maui Ocean Center (aquarium), now called Maui Ocean Treasures, is a 6,000 square foot store featuring an unbelievable assortment of ‘treasures’.  There are the typical aquarium gifts: t-shirts, stuffed sharks, a wide assortment of logo-items, plus quality items that you would never expect in an attraction gift shop.  There is fine jewelry, hand-blown glass, beautiful artwork, home and kitchen wares, and more.  It would literally take hours to pursue all the sections at this store.

I went today to get gifts for a baby shower, a baby luau (first birthday party, a big deal here in Hawaii), and a birthday/care package for my family on the East Coast (sorry everyone to ruin the surprise!).  I also figured I’d take a few pictures of some of the made on Maui items.  First, let me just say that if I had taken pictures of each made on Maui item my phone would have run out of memory.  Second, I have to say that I go to the shop fairly often, and each time I am pleasantly surprised by all the new items.  Third, the store has filled the void recently left on Maui in two different genres- It has a wide variety of books and music, including a great children’s book section, which is awesome since the only book store on the island is all the way in Lahaina.  The shop also has a great children’s/toy section, and since there is (currently) no baby stores on the island, this is a great place to buy toys, books, and the ever important kids beachwear (including the hard-to-find reusable swim diaper)!

Before we get into all the great made on Maui items I found at the aquarium today, here’s some important information to know beforehand : Admission to the store is complimentary, just check in at the Front Gate and let them know you are going to the store!  Also, aquarium members get a 15% discount on all purchases at the store.  And, while the aquarium doesn’t have an online store, if you see something you like, they’ll help you out over the phone or email, and can ship stuff all over the world!  Maui Ocean Treasures has the same hours as the aquarium : 9am to 5pm, with hours extended until 6pm in July and August. Plus, its open every day of the year, including Christmas, for really last minute gifts…

Need A Bag to carry all your purchases home?  How about a bag made from recycled kite sails, made by Sailbags Maui:

Gifts Galore, including foods, bath and body products, kitchen wares and pet gifts:

A great assortment of Hawaiiana, Environmental, Ocean-Related and more Books and DVDs, and lots and lots of Hawaiian music:

Need a gift for a baby luau, baby shower, or kids birthday party?

Or get a child’s name hand-painted in fun, tropical letters!

Gifts for someone you REALLY like (or if you’ve been VERY, VERY good this year…)

And if all that shopping makes you thirsty, don’t forget about the Roselani Ice Cream at the Reef Cafe, or the Maui Brewing Company beers at the Seascape Restaurant (all, of course, made on Maui).

What gift would you get?
