Ray Masters

Ray Masters poses with his sunset photography piece, and the lucky new owner!

Ray also gets great images from his backyard, Maui’s North Shore, and they are available on canvas as well.  Here is a recent sale of a new photograph, of Ray and the lucky new owner of the image.  It’s available in many sizes, this one featured above is a 67″ x 48″ gallery wrapped canvas ($1900)

Kim McDonald

Kim McDonald has earned her comparisons to Gauguin and other “primitive” Impressionists with her lush island paintings, primal flowing seascapes, and dreamy night skies.  Known for her oil paintings, which often sell before they are even completed, Kim has recently started painting on an unusual medium, surfboards.  Featured in this year’s Maui Calls fundraiser, in galleries on Maui and art shows across the country, Kim’s Warrior Boards are becoming her new must-have pieces for art collectors.

Rick Strini

Rick Strini was one of the first artists to revive the age-old tradition of Italian-European glass blowing and bring it to the backyard studio movement of the 60′s.  After years of successful achievements in the art glass field, Rick moved into art glass lighting, designing “Art that Illuminates”.  In addition to being a master glass blower, Rick has been traveling the world, analyzing glass factories and studios as a glass consultant.  If you need something for your walls, your tabletops, or truly unique lighting fixtures, Rick can make it for you.  Rick was also just accepted into the Maui Crafts Guild, which will be reopening in Paia next to Milagros any day now!  Make sure to stop by to check out his work in person.

Avi Kiriaty

Another signature Maui artist with a style so unique his works can be instantly identified as his own.  Review Avi’s extensive bio here on his website and check out one of his newest works, Hanging Out.  Available as a limited edition canvas giclee for $1,500, 40” x 30”.

Goldie

A perfect Christmas gift for a Maui lover is the 2014 Calendar by Goldie, one of the newer artists in the Maui scene.  “Each one of these paintings took about 200 hours of rough sketching and researching the ideas to make them all come together. The paintings are watercolours, so if one single drop of paint went where it shouldn’t, I would have to start over”

View her website to purchase the calendar and see all of Goldie’s other whimsical pieces, or check them out at Mana Foods, Collections in makawao, Maui Ocean Center, Maui Tropical Plantation, Hi-Tech.

Mauidivegirl Designs Makes a Splash with Unique Jewelry

maui dive girl necklace jewelry braceletEverybody loves a story.  Ten years ago, Chicago native Lisa Lappe was doing the corporate thing – working a desk job as a graphic designer.  She had dreams about warm weather, spending time under the sea and living a simpler life.  Then one day, she just up and moved to Maui.  Now that’s quite a story.  Lisa is now an avid SCUBA diver, and is living her own dream as a full time jewelry designer at Mauidivegirl Designs.  She shares with us her story:

glass bubble necklace diver gift

Lisa models her Breathe Bubble Necklace and Earrings, Inspired by her love of scuba diving.

Maui Made: How did you get into jewelry design?

Lisa Lappe: I have a BFA in Graphic Design and worked in the corporate world for 15 years before moving to Maui. I enjoyed making jewelry as a hobby, but enjoyed it so much that I decided to try make it my full time job. Everything is handmade by me and it’s truly become my passion.

MM: Where do you get your inspiration?

LL: My inspiration comes from the surrounding nature of the Hawaiian islands both above and below the sea with it’s life, texture, color and patterns. My designs combine natural shell, lava, coral, pearls, gemstones, sparkling crystals and story telling into island inspired, budget-friendly wearables, gifts, favors and keepsakes.

MM: What are your most popular designs?

LL: The Aloha Wish Necklaces and Adjustable Cord Bracelets are the best sellers in the boutiques. Everyone loves a story and I try and incorporate my background as a graphic designer into jewelry designs with good packaging.

The best seller on Etsy is the Mother Daughter Necklace Set. It’s meaningful and people take the time to read the story online. I wanted to come up with something unique and meaningful for gift giving.  The Aloha script necklace is also a popular item.

MM: Any Etsy tips for people just starting out?

LL: Be patient, sales don’t happen overnight, and also be active, listing new items, relisting, posting to Pinterest, Facebook, Twitter. And really good photography and descriptions are essential.

maui dive girl jewelry craft fair boothMM: What’s next for Maui Dive Girl?

LL: I’m hoping to keep expanding into other boutiques and locations. I’m currently on the Big Island, Maui, Oahu, Japan, New York, and Canada. I will be at the Haleakala Waldorf Holiday Faire on December 7th, 2013 on Maui and World Whale Day Made on Maui Fair in Kihei, Saturday, February 15th, 2014.

Mahalo to Lisa for sharing her inspirational story!

Send Aloha in the Mail with Hello Makana Gift Boxes

You’ve heard of the cheese of the month club, the wine of the month club, but did you know there’s a ‘Hawaiian gift’ of the month club?  I’ve been following Hello Makana for a while now on Facebook, and every time they post something I think, what a brilliant idea.  I should blog about it.  And never mind that they aren’t based on Maui (they are on Oahu) – they do feature made on Maui products in their boxes, and that’s good enough for me.

Hello Makana (which means gift in Hawaiian) offers monthly gift boxes of created-in-Hawaii items for pay-as-you-go, three, six or twelve month subscription plans.  In addition to the monthly boxes, Hello Makana offers themed packages, such as Back to School, and New Keiki (child – available for girls or boys), plus several of their most popular items available individually.

Know anyone expecting a new baby? Hello Makana offers the keiki box for girls or boys!

Currently celebrating their one year anniversary this October, the crew from Hello Makana took some time to answer our questions:

Maui Made: How did this idea start?

Hello Makana: As with many entrepreneurial ventures, we started with a common problem we both had – finding a hassle-free way to send truly made-in-Hawaii gifts to our friends and family living away from Hawaii.  Going to farmer’s markets and specialty stores to find unique and tasty authentic, locally made items, finding and packing a box, getting to and standing in line at the post office – all of that was just too time-consuming.  We wanted to create an easy, time-saving, online solution that allows people to send a Hawaiian gift anywhere in the world, for any occasion, knowing that their purchase truly supports locally made and grown enterprises, tells a little story about Hawaii, comes in a stylish package, and can be personalized with a gift note – just as you would do if you packed the gift to mail yourself.

MM: Do your offerings change throughout the year?

HM: Each month we offer 3-4 different items in the monthly gift boxes, and some of our specialty boxes are seasonal – for instance, we offer gift boxes for the Holidays at a few different price points that will be available just during the months of November and December.  Some of of the specialty boxes are available year-round, but tailored to an occasion – like our Back-to-School box for college students away at school, or our Keiki Box, which is great for friends and family welcoming a new baby to the ohana.  The Keiki Box was the first specialty box we rolled out because both of us have so many friends living on the mainland who are having babies and we are never able to make it to their baby showers!

hawaii food gift box

Three sizes, all delicious!

MM: What have been some of your most popular items – and some highlights from Maui?

HM: The Keiki Box is definitely one of our most popular specialty boxes.  But so is our ‘Ono Gourmet box – a beautiful box that includes organic Hamakua Coast coffee, Kauai grown and made Bananas Foster Jam, dark chocolate made Oahu-grown cacao, and Maui-grown sweet and spicy preserved pineapple by Maui Preserved. We really try to include items from each major Hawaiian Island in each of our specialty boxes, both because there’s such great diversity of products from every island, and because there’s great stories to tell about the products, where they come from and who makes them.  Every subscription and specialty Makana includes an insert that tells the story behind each item in the box.  We’ve worked with several Maui producers and shared their stories with our worldwide ‘ohana – these include, Anthony LeBua of Maui Preserved, the Parsons ‘ohana that makes Adoboloco sauces, Linda Colean, a printmaker from Makawao, and the students of Maui Culinary Academy who make delectable flavored sugars that are very popular items on our shopping site.

MM: How do people find out about your services?

Many folks that receive a Hello Makana gift from someone end up coming back to us when they need to send a gift.  But also, a lot of people find us through our Facebook posts, Twitter and Instagram.

MM: Do you see any geographic trends for your packages?  Where are they being shipped?

HM: Everywhere!  Of course the US is our biggest market, and within that, west coast is a big destination for us.  But we’re sending Makana to several cities on the east coast, in the South, many locations in Canada, and even to Sweden.  Since we launched, we’ve sent Makana to almost 300 locations around the world.

MM: What’s next for Hello Makana?

HM: Currently, we’re gearing up for the Holidays.  We’re about to roll-out some really great features on our side that will take a lot of hassle out of the Holidays… you’ll be able to send multiple gifts to multiple locations with a new, easy, check out process.  We’ll be offering a corporate or bulk-gifts program that will allow you to send personalized year-end Makana to all the vendors or employees, or go-to people that help you throughout the year.  And we’ll be launching a really special collaboration between Linda Colean of Aloha Letterpress (from Makawao) and Chae Ho Lee, a professor of graphic design at UH.  Follow our Facebook posts later this month for news on that!

hello makana anniversary hawaii gift box

Twelve months of boxes, and thousands of happy customers!

MM: Congratulations on celebrating your one-year anniversary!

HM: Mahalo!  We launched our site last October, starting with our subscription care-package program, and what an exciting year its been!  It’s a great way send loved ones  a little aloha in the mail!

And Mahalo to Hello Makana for their time… if you want to follow Hello Makana – check out their social media sites on:

Maui Made Baby

Congratulations on your recent addition!  As you’ve probably noticed, babies don’t travel lightly.  The baby gear is now probably filling out of the nursery and into your whole house.   But, the good thing is, a lot of baby gear, some essential, and some just for fun, is now being made on Maui, or by Maui-based companies.  These would all make great baby shower gifts as well!

Let’s start with the cute stuff…

First, your kid is going to need clothes.  Might as ‘whale’ buy baby something cute, and buy local!  How about the Maui Whale Onezee by Maui Thing?

a whale of a onesie by maui thing

Next, you are really going to want this darling Mommy and Daughter matching shell bangle set by Maui Ocean Jewelry!  (if this set sells, click here for the main shop page)

mom and me matching bangles

matching outfits? maybe not, matching bangles? YES, PLEASE

Then, if you haven’t already figured it out, babies spit up.  A lot.  While you are holding them.  If you want to protect yourself and your clothes (and dignity) in style, you should buy some totally adorable burp cloth set, handmade by Bitty Bambu!  (again, link to Bitty Bambu page if this item sells out)

And babies are heavy. I could go on and on about the Ergobaby carrier, which was designed on Maui. Just buy it.  If you want to know more – just add a comment below and I’ll tell you why I think the ergo is the best.  They’ve also just designed a swaddler, which I’ve not been able to try, since I have no baby at the moment, but I’d love to hear anyone else’s experience.  Judging from the success of the ergo, I’m sure its great.

You’ll probably want some balm.  Cheshire’s Herbals makes a BELLY~BUM~BALM for use on pregnant bellies, babies bums, stretch marks and all over the body for some yummy loving!

prenatal rub made on maui diaper cream

Just check out the list of ingredients, I bet it smells amazing!

And finally, we’ve saved the essentials for last. (pretty much because if I started with this, some squeamish dad or unsuspecting blog-hopper may be not quite ready for the grand finale… )

LIlia Designs makes some eco-friendly options for mom and baby –

Starting with baby – Check out these Cloth Diapers – one size fits all!  They also make organic bamboo wipes!  Great for babies with sensitive bums! (Use coupon code AF13LS for a 15% discount on online orders!)

Top Maui Made or Maui-Inspired Father’s Day Gifts

Father’s Day is coming up soon – June 16, 2013, so here are some Maui Made and Maui-inspired gift ideas for your awesome pop, or the loving hubby you’d ‘Maui’ all over again…

Top Five Maui Made or Inspired gifts for dad

Here are the Top Five Gifts for Dad – all available on Maui or online!

(priced from low to high)

 – Doc Martin’s Sunblock – ($15.50 online)

Dr. George Martin established his dermatology practice on Maui in 1989 and seeing the need for a sunscreen that would stand up to the harsh elements and extreme water time faced by the athletes on Maui (and around the world), spent over two decades researching and developing his Doc Martin’s Sunblock. The results represent some of the most significant advances in sunscreen technology in recent years. Even after hours in the water, it does not have to be re-applied, and it will not run into the eyes no matter how hard you sweat.  And your Dad sweats.  Keep him sunburn-free and help him reduce his chances of skin-cancer (yikes!) with this awesome (and inexpensive) gift!

The benefits of Doc Martin’s *Next-Gen* Sunblock are so long I’ve had to create a bullet-point list…

  • SPF 36Doc Martin's Sunblock Makes a Great Father's Day Gift
  • PABA Free
  • “Mega Waterproof™” – SPF 31 after 80 mins in the water
  • sweat proof
  • Won’t run into eyes (as a contact lens wearer, personally, I can attest that this is the only sunscreen that doesn’t burn my eyes)
  • Non-greasy
  • new Next-Gen formula has smooth application
  • UVA and UVB Protection
  • non-toxic,
  • hypoallergenic,
  • non-comedogenic
  • moisturizing

Doc Martin’s of Maui Next Gen Sunblock is sold online through Coco’s Closet and is available all over Maui at surf shops, and probably lots of other places too.  I bet they even have it at his Dermatology office in Kihei on Lipoa.

Maui Brewing Leather Can Koozie Father's Day Gift Guide Maui

It’s slim, foldable and fits on most cans and some “fat” bottles.

Kanaha Ocean Shirt by Bluesmiths of Maui

Dad will love you forever if you get him this Sunset Orange Kanaha Shirt from Bluesmiths.

When faced with the challenge of developing a shirt ideal for stand-up paddling, but also appropriate for a number of other sports, Bluesmiths knew they needed a shirt that would keep the wearer cool and sun-protected when working hard, yet warm and dry when needed.  Bluesmiths founder, John Smalley, describes the Kanaha :

Our Hydrophobic Ocean Shirts are the most technically advanced on the planet. With most ocean shirts when you get wet, you get cold.  To solve this problem, we pioneered the use of NanoSphere® from Schoeller of Swizerland. It’s by far the most durable water repellent we can could find. We’re the only brand in the world to offer it on a knitted garment. NanoSphere® is also included with our award winning Spartan Ocean Shorts.  It’s a real game-changer.

The Bluesmiths garments, which include the Kanaha (longsleeve) for men and women, the Lane (shortsleeve), the Spartan (boardshorts), and the Kula (hoodie) are exclusively available online.
