Booze News You Can Use… Maui Made Liquor Round Up

What’s going on in the world of Maui-made liquors?  Lots… read on.

OCEAN® Organic Vodka

Next time you head to the store for your OCEAN® Organic Vodka, expect a whole new bottle to reel you in!  At the Maui retailers that currently carry the 750ml bottle, the brand new ‘fishing float’ design will have you bobbing up and down in delight (sorry the fishing puns are just too easy).  Look for it at your favorite retailer, including ABC Stores, Times Supermarkets, Whaler’s General, Whole Foods and more starting mid-October 2014!  (OCEAN Pics by Jessica Pearl)

The new bottle is inspired by the traditional glass fishing net float – first used by the Norwegians in the mid 1800’s.  Though they are no longer used for fishing, they occasionally wash up on shore or are found by boaters.   Especially in the Pacific, most of the glass floats coming ashore originated in Japan. The traditional glass floats are now recognized as collectors’ items around the world.

In a nod to the brand’s global relevance, the neck of the bottle is angled to mimic that of the earth’s axis.  Additionally, the bottle subtly and elegantly showcases an evolved version of a more timeless logo mark.

The bottles are expected to wash ashore on the mainland beginning in January 2015.

From the same distilling company that brings you OCEAN® Organic Vodka, Hawaii Sea Spirits introduces Deep Island Hawaiian Rum. Made from organic sugar cane and blended with deep ocean mineral water, Deep Island Hawaiian Rum delivers a true rum experience complete with all of the flavor and character that is germane to fresh pressed cane juice.  The authentic clear Maui rum is a little sweet with hints of tropical florals and rich dark molasses.  According to Hawaii Sea Spirits’ CEO Shay Smith. “This particular clear rum is dubbed “WAVE” to further depict our respect for the energy in water that brings life to our islands.”

The rum will be available for purchase and sampling at The Farm starting September 1 and in limited release for introduction in Hawai‘i this year (Look for it at any retailer that carries Ocean), and in full release in the US mainland markets beginning 2015.

Pau Vodka

The friendly folks (and by friendly we mean hilarious, and maybe a bit crazy, cough, cough, Mark...) at Haliimaile Distilling are taking the show on the road – on the third Thursday of each month as they co-sponsor Pau Vodka Night at Dazoo in Paia.   Each event brings a new theme (like 80’s night, below), four new cocktails, and zany new ways to win Pau Vodka swag, distillery tours and so on… (costume and instagram contest, etc).  Mark Nigbur, Haliimaile’s Master Distiller makes an appearance from 5-7pm, but sometimes the party goes all night…

Maui Brewing

maui brewing kihei construction opening Anyone who follows Maui Brewing on Instagram (and you should: @MauiBrewingCo) is enjoying following along on the process of the Kihei Brewery and pub.  Besides all the mouth-watering pics of brews from their Kahana location and beyond, we get to check out bits and pieces of the construction, like stained concrete floors and whatever these are:

with captions like this: Drag conveyor set. We can unload 48,000# of malt in 1 hr. By comparison. We unload 37,000# in 6hrs currently.

In other exciting news, the Bikini Blond Lager was named the official craft beer of Hawaiian Airlines, should be on your flight as of this month!  Congrats.

Costco Shopping

A well known secret amongst the locals (ok, its not a secret at all) is that the booze selection at Costco is stellar.  They even regularly have someone to ask about the wine, so you can pick up something to go with your rotiserrie chicken or 10 pounds of sirloin.   Besides wine, they have a pretty decent beer selection with an increasing selection of craft brews, and just about any kind of liquor you may ever want.  I snapped some pics of the local choices just today, plus an awesome growler of Dead Guy Ale that glows.  I’m assuming its the label that glows but who knows, maybe the beer glows.  I should probably stock up since its almost my birthday….

Wow Wow Lemonade – Local and Fresh!

Update 9/10/15- The wow wow lemonade stand in Kahului is temporarily closed (according to the website) but click here to see where you can find the lemonade around Maui and Oahu

Every day after school the carpool kids pile into my minivan and announce that they are hungry.  I have a couple of standby treats, but yesterday I was craving something different… something cool and refreshing – and to be honest, ever since I saw someone walking around town with a big mason jar, filled with the most delicious looking juice, with the words ‘no ka oi’ emblazoned on the side, I’ve been craving Wow Wow Lemonade.

Doesn’t this make you thirsty?

Now here’s the strange part – I’d never even tried it before.  But I’ve been following them on Facebook for a while, and the combination of local, freshly hand-squeezed juice, plus a classic mason jar in a limited edition design, was just more than I could resist.  So I brought my kids down to do some product testing, and I also used them as models. They even took some pictures.  As recommended by the very friendly staff, the strawberry lemonade with just a touch of mint was a hit!  But I can’t wait to bring my mason jar back for more!

Once the lemonade was kid-approved, we checked in with Todd of Wow Wow Lemonade who so kindly answered a few of our questions…

Maui Made: When did Wow Wow Lemonade open?

Todd: We opened our lemonade business in Hawaii about 2 years ago. We started in local farmer’s markets, and we do the Wailuku 1st Friday and Kihei 4th Friday, and then we opened up our lemonade stand (at 415 Dairy Road in Kahului – adjacent to Hawaiian Island Surf Sport and across the street from Kmart) in September 2013.  We have also expanded to Oahu and have partnered with Maui born and raised native, Kawika Drummond, to expand our lemonade business on Oahu.

MM: What was the inspiration?

Todd: We started the business a few years ago, after going through a loss of one of our children. Our family wanted to start a business where we could spend more time with each other, and with the people in our community.  We have always been very inspired by creating a sustainable, organic lifestyle, that is centered around supporting other farmers and suppliers in our community.  We wanted to make a gourmet lemonade stand that was fun for kids and grown ups alike.

MM: Where do you get your produce?

Todd: We buy as much produce as we can from local farmers and growers. We get the majority of our lemons from Hana, Makawao, and Kula from small family farms or growers. Other lemons often come from individual families that have a few trees, and they drop them by our stand.  Our Tahitian limes come from a grower in Haiku. Our Lavender comes from the lavender farm upcountry.  Strawberries come from the Kula strawberry farm.  We get our sugar from the Maui sugar mill, and we get most of our other fruits from small farmers in Kula.  Some of the herbs and smaller fruits we also grow ourselves. Many of the growers just drop the fruits off at the stand, and we prepare it in our commercial kitchen.

MM: What’s the best part of doing business on Maui?

Todd: We love the people, and we love working with the local farmers and suppliers. There is so much kindness and the people are so filled with the aloha of Hawaii.  We love doing business with people in the community on a personal basis, where we know our growers, and where our fruit comes from. The growers have become our friends, and it becomes more about good relationships than just doing business.

MM: I love the mason jars, its great branding and the designs are really cute.  Where did that idea come from?

Todd: I got the idea for mason jar lemonades from my wife, who grew up on a farm.  They always drank lemonade from a mason jar.  I used to work in the clothing industry, and I used a grommet press for clothing grommets, so I decided to try the grommet press on the mason jar lids so people could put their straws in them.

MM: Will you be offering different limited edition designs in the future?

Todd: Yes, we are working on a couple of new limited jars after the ‘No Ka ‘Oi’ jar  that will be released soon. Stay tuned….

maui bottled lemonade maui on mauiMM: What’s next for Wow Wow Lemonade?

Todd: We are opening up another Lemonade stand in the next month. We haven’t announced the location yet, but will let you know shortly!  We are also expanding our distribution of our bottled lemonades through local retail accounts and food trucks. Maui Fresh Streatery truck is selling our lemonades, as well as, Da Local Banana, Maui Greens market, and other small grocery stores.

MM: Do you have a kama’aina discount?

Todd: We offer a kama’aina discount of $1 off all new lemonade drinks.  We also offer refills on any mason jar for $5.

Shaka Approved!

MM: Anything else we need to know?

Todd: We often have special offers throughout the month on refills, new drinks, and specials, so stay tuned to our instagram (@wowwowlemonde) for more good deals.

Maui Jewelry Designers Featured in Sports Illustrated’s Swimsuit Issue 2014

maui jewelry sports illustrated swimsuit issue

As a first time subscriber to Sports Illustrated, (a gift for the hubby) I was so excited to get the Swimsuit Issue in the mail, and even more excited to get it while he was on a trip, so I could actually look at it for a while.  Upon his return, his comment after reviewing it for a while was the same as my own thought – “I didn’t see any bathing suits”.  So, let’s move on from the obvious, and head to the more important issue.  The jewelry.  As I flipped through the pages I saw lots of names that I recognized, and realized this next post had to be about the talented Maui-based jewelry designers who were featured in the latest Swimsuit Issue.

Laurie from Hula Hoops Maui is one of this year’s featured designers and shared with us how jewelry is picked for the shoots: “I received a request from the editors of Sports Illustrated Swim for certain pieces that corresponded to a theme for a particular shoot. I sent them styles that fit that theme and was fortunate enough to be featured in this year’s edition.”

(Maui Made Note: In the magazine, the sections are organized by model status “Rookie” or geographic location, included below to help you find them.)

Hula Hoops Maui – Hula Hoops Maui’s Mini Bear Claw was clearly what the editors were looking for – it was modeled both by Rookie Marloes and Jessica in Madacascar.  Chrissy in the Cook Islands shows off the Mini Arrowhead Necklace

Special COUPON CODE for MauiMadeBlog Readers: Enter code MAUI20 to get 20% off Hula Hoops Maui jewelry between today and March 7, 2014!

Where to buy on Maui: Nuage Bleu in Paia, Hale Zen in Lahaina, Sand People in Kaanapali and the Four Seasons Spa in Wailea.

Samantha Howard for Wings Hawaii – Samantha’s delicate gold rings were a big hit – they were seen on Rookie Valerie, on Lily in the Cook Islands, and on Gigi on Jersey Shore.  The Wings crew has made it easy to shop the Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Issue 2014 collection – click here

Where to buy on Maui: Check out their flagship store at 69 Hana Hwy in Paia.

Sophie Grace Maui: A necklace by Sophie Grace Maui graces the neck of Irina in Madacascar, as does another on Chrissy in the Cook Islands.  (The one seen isn’t on the online shop but here’s another coral necklace by Sophie Grace Maui)

Where to buy on Maui: Visit Sophie Grace Maui’s flagship shop at 36 Baldwin Ave in Paia, Poolside at the Grand Wailea, or at the Spa at the Andaz Maui in Wailea

Rockabella Jewels: Rocking the Rockabella Jewels are Rookies Gigi and Lily, Emily in Switzerland, Jessica in Madacascar, and Valerie in Brazil.
