Paia’s Newest Hot-Spot – Sporting Club of the Pacific

Are you ready to join ‘the Club’?  No membership, gold-medals or magazine cover shots needed, just a thirst for some all-natural ingredients…

Enter to win!  On Thursday, October 23 (contest may be extended to get more entries) – a winner will receive a pre and post workout meal and two t-shirts!  Enter on the Maui Made Facebook page– (Contest post pinned to top while entries being accepted)

If you’ve been on Maui for any length of time, you know that we have our share of world-class athletes, from world-champion windsurfers and stand-up paddlers to Olympic skiers who live and train on Maui in the off-season.  For a while now, some of Maui’s top athletes have been turning to Tugger Balcom for their performance enhancing beverages.  Now, we’re not talking about some secret formula of artificial chemicals or banned substances, these are real, natural ingredients, formulated specifically for athletes for pre- or post-workout.

Outdoor seating at the Club… no need to wipe the sand off your feet!

And because of some ‘obstacles’ recently created by the government in regards to selling ‘raw’ beverages through wholesale, Tugger decided to open up a juice bar in Paia to sell his ever expanding line of juices, coffee and ‘fuel’ for athletes (and, the rest of us, too).  So now, whether you have just finished your CrossFit or barre class, you are training for your Maui to Molokai run, or you are just headed to the office, you can come grab some fuel at Paia’s newest hot spot, the Sporting Club of the Pacific.  Plus, the seating is outdoors so you don’t even need to wipe the sweat off your brow or the sand off your feet.  You might even get to run elbows with some of these world-class athletes…

Tugger’s entry into the performance beverage world began with his own struggle with severe psoriasis.  After eliminating sugar, dairy and eggs from his diet, and seeing success with that change, he started moving away from drinks with artificial ingredients and towards more natural sources of hydration and energy.  Simultaneously, Tugger took a course in free diving, and learned about using chlorophyll as a means to be able to hold your breath for longer periods of time.  (And if you want to know more about how this works, you should probably go talk to Tugger).

After getting positive feedback from big-wave surfers and free divers from his first round of bottled juices, Tugger began wholesaling.  Alive and Well, Choice and the Kuau Store were selling out each week, but a new law forbidding the sale of raw juice changed his focus, just as the space behind Puka Puka in Paia (the former Paia Bay Coffee) opened up.

His initial line of two drinks- a pineapple and chlorophyll juice and cold-pressed coffee – has expanded (and is still expanding daily) to : three types of Hydration drinks, four Fresh Juices, Strong Coffee, Wellness Shots, Blended Beverages and Acai and Green bowls.  (Menu printed at bottom)

100% Maui Coffee- Custom Roasted and Blended by Maui Coffee Roasters.

The story behind the name and the brand, Sporting Club of the Pacific, is probably a whole separate blog post, so I’ll just say that Tugger has assembled a group of world-class artisans from around the Pacific, blacksmiths, speargun makers, surfboard shapers, and more, into a kind-of artists co-op (and again, talk to Tugger if you want to learn more about this, or visit the website).  Because the brand is based on custom-made equipment for high-performance, his juices naturally fit into this project as well.

As much as possible I try to blog about personal experiences, so I ventured into the Sporting Club of the Pacific (although I apparently ‘just missed’ about a half-dozen sports superstars who had visited that morning) and its clear that Tugger’s his enthusiasm for quality, researched ingredients is evident in his products.  The acai bowl was delicious (luckily it was cleared away before I was tempted to lick the bottom), each of the juices were pure tasting, and not too sweet or overpowering as some juices can be, and the coffee was excellent as well, although I now need to go back and try it with the house-made coconut cream.

Secret Service

Dazoo Restaurant and Pau Vodka Serve up the Fun!

Dazoo Restaurant is Maui’s best kept secret for hand-crafted cocktails, but with bloggers like ‘EZdrinking’ discovering this Paia restaurant and spreading the word, the secret is soon to be out.

Dazoo is gaining attention for their creative cocktails using fresh squeezed, locally sourced juices and Maui made liquors. This month, they are launching Pau Vodka Night, on Wednesday, July 16, from 5-7pm.

On the third Wednesday of each month, Dazoo’s talented team of bartenders, lead by Jimmy Shoemaker, will create four new cocktails featuring Pau Vodka (crafted using Maui pineapples just up the road in Haliimaile) and other local ingredients.

Pau Vodka’s master distiller Mark Nigbur will also be at the event, to answer questions and entertain the crowds!

Jimmy Shoemaker, Dazoo’s bartender, and Mark Nigbur, Pau Vodka’s master distiller, will be serving up great drinks and lots of laughs the third Wednesday of every month

I was invited to sample and photograph the cocktails (its a rough job, but someone has to do it!) to help promote the upcoming event, and all I can say is I’ve already made my reservations (and you should too!).

In July, the featured cocktails will be:

Wow Wow Lemonade – Local and Fresh!

Update 9/10/15- The wow wow lemonade stand in Kahului is temporarily closed (according to the website) but click here to see where you can find the lemonade around Maui and Oahu

Every day after school the carpool kids pile into my minivan and announce that they are hungry.  I have a couple of standby treats, but yesterday I was craving something different… something cool and refreshing – and to be honest, ever since I saw someone walking around town with a big mason jar, filled with the most delicious looking juice, with the words ‘no ka oi’ emblazoned on the side, I’ve been craving Wow Wow Lemonade.

lemonade mason jar sun maui hawaii

Doesn’t this make you thirsty?

Now here’s the strange part – I’d never even tried it before.  But I’ve been following them on Facebook for a while, and the combination of local, freshly hand-squeezed juice, plus a classic mason jar in a limited edition design, was just more than I could resist.  So I brought my kids down to do some product testing, and I also used them as models. They even took some pictures.  As recommended by the very friendly staff, the strawberry lemonade with just a touch of mint was a hit!  But I can’t wait to bring my mason jar back for more!

Once the lemonade was kid-approved, we checked in with Todd of Wow Wow Lemonade who so kindly answered a few of our questions…

Maui Made: When did Wow Wow Lemonade open?

Todd: We opened our lemonade business in Hawaii about 2 years ago. We started in local farmer’s markets, and we do the Wailuku 1st Friday and Kihei 4th Friday, and then we opened up our lemonade stand (at 415 Dairy Road in Kahului – adjacent to Hawaiian Island Surf Sport and across the street from Kmart) in September 2013.  We have also expanded to Oahu and have partnered with Maui born and raised native, Kawika Drummond, to expand our lemonade business on Oahu.

MM: What was the inspiration?

Todd: We started the business a few years ago, after going through a loss of one of our children. Our family wanted to start a business where we could spend more time with each other, and with the people in our community.  We have always been very inspired by creating a sustainable, organic lifestyle, that is centered around supporting other farmers and suppliers in our community.  We wanted to make a gourmet lemonade stand that was fun for kids and grown ups alike.

MM: Where do you get your produce?

Todd: We buy as much produce as we can from local farmers and growers. We get the majority of our lemons from Hana, Makawao, and Kula from small family farms or growers. Other lemons often come from individual families that have a few trees, and they drop them by our stand.  Our Tahitian limes come from a grower in Haiku. Our Lavender comes from the lavender farm upcountry.  Strawberries come from the Kula strawberry farm.  We get our sugar from the Maui sugar mill, and we get most of our other fruits from small farmers in Kula.  Some of the herbs and smaller fruits we also grow ourselves. Many of the growers just drop the fruits off at the stand, and we prepare it in our commercial kitchen.

MM: What’s the best part of doing business on Maui?

Todd: We love the people, and we love working with the local farmers and suppliers. There is so much kindness and the people are so filled with the aloha of Hawaii.  We love doing business with people in the community on a personal basis, where we know our growers, and where our fruit comes from. The growers have become our friends, and it becomes more about good relationships than just doing business.

MM: I love the mason jars, its great branding and the designs are really cute.  Where did that idea come from?

Todd: I got the idea for mason jar lemonades from my wife, who grew up on a farm.  They always drank lemonade from a mason jar.  I used to work in the clothing industry, and I used a grommet press for clothing grommets, so I decided to try the grommet press on the mason jar lids so people could put their straws in them.

MM: Will you be offering different limited edition designs in the future?

Todd: Yes, we are working on a couple of new limited jars after the ‘No Ka ‘Oi’ jar  that will be released soon. Stay tuned….

maui bottled lemonade maui on mauiMM: What’s next for Wow Wow Lemonade?

Todd: We are opening up another Lemonade stand in the next month. We haven’t announced the location yet, but will let you know shortly!  We are also expanding our distribution of our bottled lemonades through local retail accounts and food trucks. Maui Fresh Streatery truck is selling our lemonades, as well as, Da Local Banana, Maui Greens market, and other small grocery stores.

MM: Do you have a kama’aina discount?

Todd: We offer a kama’aina discount of $1 off all new lemonade drinks.  We also offer refills on any mason jar for $5.

Shaka Approved!

MM: Anything else we need to know?

Todd: We often have special offers throughout the month on refills, new drinks, and specials, so stay tuned to our instagram (@wowwowlemonde) for more good deals.

Eat like a local with Tour Da Food

When it comes to vacations, there are three kinds of people.  Some people go on vacation to relax, some like to explore, and some people just want to eat.  Fortunately for people that come to Maui, with a fascinating history of global cuisines and an abundance of fresh fruit, fish and other foods, Maui’s culinary options will keep your palate happy for the entire length of your stay.   And you haven’t really been to Maui without sampling a plate lunch, enjoying fresh poke, and you really can’t miss our famous shave ice.  With all the options, won’t you feel better knowing you’ve had the best?

Maui's Best Local Food Tour Activity

The Plate Lunch – The Signature Local Food in Hawaii –

If you are one of those foodie travelers, you’re second call after booking your flight should be to Bonnie Friedman.  A serious foodie herself, Bonnie established Tour Da Food in 2008 as the island’s first food tour and the only tour that focuses solely on ‘local food’.

Bonnie currently offers four tours – ‘Wailuku’, ‘Upcountry’, ‘Noodles, Dumplings & Dim Sum’ and perhaps Maui’s most unique tour, ‘GAS-tronomy’, a tour of four of Maui’s best local foods found in gas stations.  Every tour includes transportation from and back to the central meeting place; all food; a goodie bag; and a list of additional off-the-radar eating places.    And for foodies who would rather go it alone, Bonnie can provide a personalized list of recommendations through her website at Cuisine Confidential.

Explore Maui’s ‘hidden’ food treasures with Tour Da Food

Bonnie has built close personal and professional relationships with Maui’s chefs, farmers and food producers during her decades spent in various careers on Maui. She is herself a certified Pastry Cook, and has co-authored two cookbooks for Ten Speed Press.

Having just returned from her own foodie trip to Italy (which we jealously observed via Facebook!), she answered some of our questions about her unique activity :

maui's best shave ice tour

Shave Ice Caps off Each Tour

Made Made: How did you come up with this idea?

Bonnie Friedman: I have to give credit to my friend/colleague Keli’i Brown, the PR director of the Maui Visitors & Convention Bureau. He took a food tour of Chinatown in NYC in the mid-2000s. When he came back to Maui, he told me about it – VERY excitedly! – and said “You need to do this in Wailuku.” It took quite a while – about 18 months – to do all the research and plot out what I considered to be an excellent local food tour. I launched Tour da Food Maui in May 2008.

MM: What’s your most popular tour?

BF: I think Wailuku is still probably the most popular tour with Upcountry a close second.

MM: Any favorite moments or experiences?

BF:  For me, the best moments are connecting with visitors, especially first time visitors, and introducing them to real local food. And they all really seem to love the experience. Most rewarding is when my guests and I become friends. It’s happened several times. There’s a family I see every year when they visit Maui and a couple I have at least one meal with in NYC when I travel there.

Maui's Best Manapua...

There’s nothing like a Manapua – It’s worth the trip to Maui just in itself…

MM: Anything else you want to add?

BF: A few words of my “local food philosophy” – we have some excellent fine dining in Hawai’i, no doubt about it. But for me, the one thing we have here that no other place in the world has is local food. I think we learn a great deal about a place and its culture through its food. That’s the experience I hope I give my guests.

Mahalo to Bonnie for making us hungry answering our questions, and don’t forget to check out her tour options on your next visit to Maui!

Booze, Liquor, Alcohol… straight up, on the rocks, or mixed with some fresh tropical fruit juice, hopefully with a paper umbrella topping it off, each one best enjoyed while viewing a beautiful Maui sunset…

Here’s a round up of all the alcoholic beverages that I could find (and please comment below if I left something out!) that are made on Maui.

Plus, as a quick sidebar – last time I was at Costco I took a couple pictures of some locally made beverages that were for sale – this may not be complete (and as you know, their stock changes daily), but just to give you an idea:

  • Old Lahaina Gold Rum –  750ml – $13.79
  • Maui Brewing Co  Bikini Blonde Lager – 24 cans – $33.55
  • Ocean Vodka – 1 L – $32.99

Maui Cello Lemon Liquer Mauicello – Mauicello is Maui’s very own lemon liqueur made exclusively with lemons and sugar grown right here on Maui.  Although inspired by and similar to Italy’s traditional liqueur, limoncello, Mauicello’s rich golden color and distinctive taste make it a uniquely Maui product. Available at several retailers around Maui, and on Oahu at the Whole Foods locations.

Ocean Vodka– Handcrafted on Maui, Ocean Vodka is certified 100% USDA organic and is the only vodka in the world distilled from organic sugar cane. As a result Ocean Vodka is naturally gluten free.   Ocean Vodka is also the only spirit in the world made with deep ocean mineral water, which imparts a unique character to the vodka and adds great depth of flavor to the traditional vodka cocktail.  Ocean Vodka can be found at distributors around the country, or can be sent to you through their many nationwide distributorsTours of the distillery in Upcountry Maui are available daily.  (Photo by the talented Jessica Pearl Photography)

Maui Brewing- This multi-award winning brand includes a brewery offering tours, a popular brewpub, and an extensive line of flagship and limited edition brews.  Yet another brewpub and brewery is currently under construction.  Maui Brewing Beers can be found in Maui’s best restaurants, in almost every grocery or convenience store, around the island chain, and around the country, or sent to your door from their retailers.

Old Lahaina Rum– Built the distillery inside a 100 year old building on the site of a former sugar mill on Maui’s North Shore. The silver, gold and dark rums are made with Maui grown sugar cane and molasses hand blended from mixed aged rum stocks.   Currently only available in Hawaii. Recently spotted at Maui’s Costco.

2016 Update: Kether has just opened her own salon in Makawao, The Honey House, featuring waxing, facials and more!  Located just about Droplets., across the street from Casanova.

In 2007, Tiare Rietow, an herbalist, and Kether Quinlan, an aesthetician, met while working together at the Dragon’s Den Herb Shop in Makawao. They discovered they had a similar vision of creating their own line of body products with raw, natural, organic ingredients, as well as herbs and healing honey.   With this simple idea and a lot of hard work, Queen Bee Productions was born.

Their recipes are based on old Apothecaries, ancient Alchemy, and traditional women’s beauty products, using wild-crafted honey from around the Hawaiian Islands, including their own harvest of Maui honey and beeswax.

Maui Made: What makes your products unique?

Queen Bee Production: Our Products are made by hand in small batches.  We use only raw local Honey & beeswax from Maui, and use only the finest natural and organic ingredients.  Our products are so natural they are nearly edible, all biodegradable, packaged in recyclable & reusable materials and made with integrity.

MM: What are the challenges of manufacturing on Maui?

QBP: The biggest challenge on Maui is that we are isolated, so shipping costs are high.  We pay a lot in shipping over here to the islands; such as our glass bottles, heavy liquids and other bulk supplies.  Also distribution is limited without shipping costs.  Marketing is also a challenge!  There are no billboards, thankfully, but advertisements are expensive, so we have to be creative and collaborative!

Queen Bee Maui Line

MM: Any tips for anyone looking to start their own product line?

QBP: Research Research Research first! Don’t give up, and don’t rush.  Also, its always going to take more time, money, and energy than you think.

MM: Was there a particular event that helped launch your company?

QBP: Nothing in particular, but when our Distributor from Japan approached us that was a nice boost.  We have been mentioned in Maui No Ka oi Magazine which helped to spread the word here on Maui!

MM: What’s your best selling product?

QBP: Probably the Honey Rose Facial Cleanser.  But our Rose Facial Toner, Rose Cream, Cocoa Body Butter and Luxurious Body Oil are all very well loved.

MM: What are your newest products?

QBP: We just launched our 4 foaming body washes in Maui inspired Scents: (KULA mint, WAILEA lime, HANA Jasmine, OLINDA eucalyptus), and 2 new Epsom Bath Soaks  – Purifying and Calming.

MM: What’s next for Queen Bee?

QBP: We are presently perfecting the formulation on baby products.  We will have a nice pack of essentials for mom & baby.  And there are some exciting new expansions on the horizon.
