Dazoo Restaurant and Pau Vodka Serve up the Fun!

Dazoo Restaurant is Maui’s best kept secret for hand-crafted cocktails, but with bloggers like ‘EZdrinking’ discovering this Paia restaurant and spreading the word, the secret is soon to be out.

Dazoo is gaining attention for their creative cocktails using fresh squeezed, locally sourced juices and Maui made liquors. This month, they are launching Pau Vodka Night, on Wednesday, July 16, from 5-7pm.

On the third Wednesday of each month, Dazoo’s talented team of bartenders, lead by Jimmy Shoemaker, will create four new cocktails featuring Pau Vodka (crafted using Maui pineapples just up the road in Haliimaile) and other local ingredients.

Pau Vodka’s master distiller Mark Nigbur will also be at the event, to answer questions and entertain the crowds!

Jimmy Shoemaker, Dazoo’s bartender, and Mark Nigbur, Pau Vodka’s master distiller, will be serving up great drinks and lots of laughs the third Wednesday of every month

I was invited to sample and photograph the cocktails (its a rough job, but someone has to do it!) to help promote the upcoming event, and all I can say is I’ve already made my reservations (and you should too!).

In July, the featured cocktails will be:

Made on Maui – Booze Round Up

maui beer cans beach

Booze, Liquor, Alcohol… straight up, on the rocks, or mixed with some fresh tropical fruit juice, hopefully with a paper umbrella topping it off, each one best enjoyed while viewing a beautiful Maui sunset…

Here’s a round up of all the alcoholic beverages that I could find (and please comment below if I left something out!) that are made on Maui.

Plus, as a quick sidebar – last time I was at Costco I took a couple pictures of some locally made beverages that were for sale – this may not be complete (and as you know, their stock changes daily), but just to give you an idea:

  • Old Lahaina Gold Rum –  750ml – $13.79
  • Maui Brewing Co  Bikini Blonde Lager – 24 cans – $33.55
  • Ocean Vodka – 1 L – $32.99

Maui Cello Lemon Liquer Mauicello – Mauicello is Maui’s very own lemon liqueur made exclusively with lemons and sugar grown right here on Maui.  Although inspired by and similar to Italy’s traditional liqueur, limoncello, Mauicello’s rich golden color and distinctive taste make it a uniquely Maui product. Available at several retailers around Maui, and on Oahu at the Whole Foods locations.

Ocean Vodka– Handcrafted on Maui, Ocean Vodka is certified 100% USDA organic and is the only vodka in the world distilled from organic sugar cane. As a result Ocean Vodka is naturally gluten free.   Ocean Vodka is also the only spirit in the world made with deep ocean mineral water, which imparts a unique character to the vodka and adds great depth of flavor to the traditional vodka cocktail.  Ocean Vodka can be found at distributors around the country, or can be sent to you through their many nationwide distributorsTours of the distillery in Upcountry Maui are available daily.  (Photo by the talented Jessica Pearl Photography)

Pau Vodka Maui Hawaii Pau Maui Vodka– Handcrafted in small batches by Haliimaile Distilling Company, ultra-premium Pau Maui vodka is distilled from Hawaiian Pineapples, yet there is no hint of pineapple flavor in the finished product. Once distilled, it is mixed with crystal clear Hawaiian spring water.  Every ingredient that goes into the vodka is born on the islands, and the utmost in care is taken to ensure purity at every stage of the process.

Maui Brewing- This multi-award winning brand includes a brewery offering tours, a popular brewpub, and an extensive line of flagship and limited edition brews.  Yet another brewpub and brewery is currently under construction.  Maui Brewing Beers can be found in Maui’s best restaurants, in almost every grocery or convenience store, around the island chain, and around the country, or sent to your door from their retailers.

Maui Wine Pineapple OrderMaui’s Winery/ Tedeschi Vineyards – Maui’s Winery, the Valley Isle’s sole commercial winery, is known for their varied selection of wines including sparkling, pineapple, grape and a delicious raspberry dessert wine.   Located at the scenic and historic Ulupalakua Ranch, they offer wine tasting throughout the day, and tours twice daily (check website for more info).  They can also ship your order to most states.

Old Lahaina Rum– Built the distillery inside a 100 year old building on the site of a former sugar mill on Maui’s North Shore. The silver, gold and dark rums are made with Maui grown sugar cane and molasses hand blended from mixed aged rum stocks.   Currently only available in Hawaii. Recently spotted at Maui’s Costco.

Haleakala Distillers – Creaters of Maui Dark Rum, Maui Gold Rum, Braddah Kimo’s Da Bomb Rum, (77.5% alcohol by volume), Maui Pineapple Flavored Rum, and Maui Okolehao, made from East Maui ti root.  All Haleakala Distillers products are distilled on Maui from 100% Maui-grown natural ingredients.    Click here to see the list of retailers in Hawaii OR here to see the retailers on the mainland or order through an online retailer.

Side Trip To Ocean Vodka and Surfing Goat Dairy

Omaopio Road, which connects Kula to Puunene, didn’t have much reason to see visitor traffic, unless you had a particular interest in fancy goat cheese or adorable baby goats.   Now, in addition to Surfing Goat Dairy, Omaopio Road is now also a destination for vodka connoisseurs!

In April, Ocean Vodka, the number one selling ‘made in Hawaii’ spirit, opened a brand new Organic Farm and Distillery, with tours available several times a day.

I arrived too late for the tour, but the gift shop is open to the public currently during tour hours, from 9-4 daily.  There’s a few logo items available for purchase, and some vodka of course, but according to Danielle, the very friendly shop employee, in a few weeks it should be full of some great made on Maui finds!  I’ll check it out and report back.

Tours of the organic farm and distillery are available daily at 9:30, 10:30, 11:30, 1:00 and 2:30.  Tours are $10 a person or $25 includes lunch.  To schedule your tour you should contact Ocean Vodka here , or just drop by and see if there’s space available!

According to their website,

Ocean Vodka is the only spirit in the world made from organically farmed sugar cane, blended with deep ocean mineral water and powered by the sun. Ocean Vodka is 100% Certified USDA Organic and gluten-free, with a proprietary column distillation process that produces an ultra-clean spirit highly decorated and unrivaled in the marketplace.  When this pure refined spirit is blended with deep ocean mineral water, Ocean Vodka takes on a unique, mineral-rich flavor found in no other vodka.

Hum, I wonder if the tour includes a sample…

And, a baby pineapple.

And, a baby pineapple.

Just up the road from Ocean Vodka is Surfing Goat Dairy, where you can purchase goat cheese, check out the baby goats (there always seem to be some babies there!  These goats breed like rabbits!), and yes, take a tour!

Surfing Goat Dairy actually offers three types of tours, a casual tour with no reservations necessary, for $10/adult and $7 kids, evening chores and milking tour, Mon-Sat at 3:15 for $15/a, $12/k, (reservations recommended) and a grand dairy tour for $25 on selected Saturday mornings, which includes milking a goat and sampling many cheeses!

I haven’t taken a tour yet, but it’s a nice, casual place where you can hang out and enjoy the goats, and if you linger long enough, you can get some good info!  According to yesterday’s overheard conversation, the dairy  mixes too particular types of goats (and probably more) – one that produces lots of milk, and one that produces milk with a high butter-fat content.  There really is more to goat cheese than I ever knew, perhaps this summer we’ll have to add a goat tour to our list of family activities!

One thing is for sure- there’s a lilikoi goat milk cheesecake that I’m dying to try!  There’s even a nice shady seating area to enjoy your cheesy delights.

Welcome to Maui Made

Welcome to the Maui Made Blog!  I’ll be reviewing Made on Maui products, including art, clothes, jewelry, crafts, food and beauty products.  I’ll also share news on events, such as today’s exciting Grand Opening Celebration for Ocean Vodka‘s new distillery today in Kula.  The new distillery brings all of Ocean Vodka’s operation under one roof :

For more than six years, the Smith Family has worked diligently on bringing Ocean Vodka from Maui to the international marketplace.  The new upgraded facility provides Ocean Vodka control of all supply and production, with farming, distillation, manufacturing, marketing and sales consolidated for the first time since the brand’s inception.  It also solidifies Ocean Vodka’s growing presence in the marketplace, supporting a ten-fold increase in business as well as new opportunities to expand production into rums, whiskies and unique, naturally infused spirits, while providing additional jobs for the local Maui community.

To follow the Maui Made blog, you can sign up to get an email of new posts, or you can follow along on Facebook (click for direct link), if you already get too much email!  There will likely be more shares and quick posts on Facebook anyway. Eventually, there will also be a more formal e-newsletter, directed to Hawaii-based and national media, to get some much needed exposure to all these incredible Maui artists, designers, and Vodka producers (ok, the vodka producers seem to have no problem getting press) and more information on how to receive that e-newsletter will be posted here on this blog.
