Swoon-Worthy Leather Bags – Bags by Gscout

scout hobo bag bags by gscout Inspiration for new blog posts come from everywhere… meeting new people, shopping through our local boutiques, or in the case of this post, simply scrolling through Facebook. I have no idea how these pictures originally appeared on my feed (through the magic of Facebook!) but when I saw these stunning, handmade leather bags, I just had to investigate further!

Gillian Adamo of Bags by Gscout shares her story of how she learned about leather work, taught herself how to make bags, and then combined her lifelong skills as a healer to create custom bags, along with her daughter and partner Cheyenne, with just a bit of something special….

One of the original bags, twenty years old!

“Twenty five years ago I was traveling in Nepal, a girl walking down the dusty streets of Kathmandu caught my eye. She looked like a wild gypsy girl and she had this amazing braided leather necklace on. I asked her about it and she said she made it and that she sold them. I asked her if I could buy one from her and she said “No, I’ll teach you how to make it”!!

“She invited myself and my boyfriend to come and stay with her in her home on a lake in a town at the base of the Himalayas. Over a period of 3 weeks, she taught me numerous techniques in leather braid work.

“After returning home to Canada I got the idea to make leather bags. I created designs in my mind for bags and stitched them into form with the stitches I had been taught in Nepal. My craft was born. I created leather bags in Canada for the following 3 years. Then I moved to Maui to raise my daughter. I put my bags to the side and 20 years later my daughter asked me to make her a bag. I did, I posted a picture of it and I got 5 requests for bags… Gscout  begins!!!

“This has been a full time job for me, alongside the healing work that I have been doing throughout my life. They go hand in hand as the healing energy I work with also goes in to every one of these bags. I like to say that people ‘carry a feeling’ with them when they carry our bags. Its the feeling I generate through my healing work.

“Each bag is handmade with no electricity or machines, using genuine Italian & Spanish leathers and deer skin from Alaska. My daughter, Cheyenne Jagger, works along side me. Before we joined forces, she acquired a knack for goldsmith skills and became a jeweler of fine metals and stones. In our Gscout Bags, Cheyenne creates solid silver hand-pounded rings for our strap attachments, adding one more level of refinement to these creations. Many of the Gscout bags are made to order so as our clients may have a bag perfectly fit to the individuals tastes and needs.

The custom bag for Christine McVie

“Mick Fleetwood’s girlfriend commissioned a bag for him, and she gave me a few little trinket treasures of his that I attached to the pouch. She also gave me a cool skeleton key that had special significance between the two of them and I added that to the inside pocket of her bag.  A year later, Mick commissioned a bag as a gift for Christine McVie —> (Christine’s clutch got cool sexy lines to match her cool rock and roll persona), then the next year he bought his girlfriend one of my bags. I made Krishna Das a bag, and I added a vintage Indian coin since India is so deeply in his heart. I’m making something for Gretchen Rhodes, who sings with Kenny Chesney. Gretchen’s bag is going to be earthy and sexy and solid just like her.”

Makawao Update + DRIFTWOOD’s Grand Opening!

MAKAWAO signs maui where to shop

2016 Update: I’m hoping to head up to Makawao to scope out all the new stores and coffee shops, but wanted to mention that one of the owners of the beloved brand Queen Bee Productions has just opened her own salon in Makawao, The Honey House, featuring waxing, facials and more!  Located just about Droplets., across the street from Casanova.

You know something special is happening when driftwood washes ashore and makes it all the way up the hill to Makawao.  And you know it’s something extra special when that DRIFTWOOD turns out to be a brand new boutique by the force behind Paragon Salon, Carrie Gebb.  The women’s and home goods shop enjoyed its soft opening on April 30, but the official grand opening will be Sunday, May 3 with 10% off purchases and fun surprises all day.

driftwood maui clothes women's makawaoAccording to their website, “DRIFTWOOD features carefully curated merchandise for the distinguished buyer, encompassing all that a Maui lifestyle has to offer from the mountain to the sea. We feature women’s clothing and accessories, all-natural beauty products, as well as home goods and edibles.”  Their website is worth a look just by itself, with swoon-worthy photographs and an impressive and extensive selection of labels.   But I’m not the style expert, if you want to get the scoop from a real fashionista, head on over to mauishopgirl.com to check out her take!

These reversible dresses by SewHiKai are designed to be comfortable, even for girls with sensitivity issues!

And now for the rest of the news from Makawao:

Across the street from DRIFTWOOD, children’s consignment and boutique droplets. is celebrating its first anniversary, and has turned into THE place to buy children’s gifts and clothes, with an ever-growing selection of locally made children’s clothes, including one of our favorites, bitty bambu, and these darling reversible dresses by SewHiKai ——–>, made specifically for children with sensitivity issues (why am I only learning about these now!!!)

Next door to droplets., the Julie Galeeva gallery moved into a smaller space, and Kama Lei Design jewels moved in.

And speaking of art galleries, after several years, Kirsten Bunney closed down her gallery, but I believe you can still contact her about purchasing art through her website.  In the former gallery’s place is now Crystal Harmonics (you may have also seen them on Kauai), with some amazing ‘singing’ crystal bowls!   According to the owners, who also offer sound healing, “the singing alchemy bowls are made of the highest grade pure crystal quartz blended with gemstones or other mineral elements.  The sine waves of their sound are clear, consistent and sustained and amplify the essence of the minerals as well as expressing their note.” You have to check this place out – you have to HEAR it to believe it, or they have some samples to listen on their website!

In the building just behind Crystal Harmonics, Vanity Salon has been sold and renamed Jewel Salon, but if you are looking for any of the Vanity ladies, Jeffie is now at Haleakala Hair Lounge, (right above DRIFTWOOD), Sara and Trisha are at Beauty Bar in Wailuku, and Kourtney is at Salon Tiare in Haiku.

And another cute store that’s new-ish to Makawao is the ‘brother’ store to Pink by Nature Homme  by Nature, which has things for men (get it? Homme means man in French) and home (and some cute kids stuff too).

What’s your favorite place to check out in Makawao?

And a few more pictures from our beautiful day shooting around Makawao…

Moolei by Maile – Cotton Scarf Lei

maile naehu scarf lei

“Adorned is the bosom with a Mo’olei” – Maile Naehu

Mo’olei is a poetic term in Hawaiian for one’s grandchildren. A grandparent affectionately refers to their grandchildren as the lei of flowers worn near their heart.

Mo’olei is also Hawaii’s newest fashion must-have.  Artist and designer Maile Naehu started the Mo’olei by Maile when taking a break from teaching to care for her own children.  Maile shares her story…

Maui Made: How did Mo’olei get its start?

Maile Naehu: I have always been an artist but never thought that I could make a living from it-  well, it’s almost two years later and business is starting to picking up! Mo’olei by Maile is a small family business where I integrate and express my lifestyle and values as a wahine Hawai’i in every piece.

maunaloa lei maui hawaii molokai how to make

Maunaloa is an infinty scarf lei that can be worn open as a lei, as a choker with draped lei, or doubled up when cold. Maunaloa is the Hawaiian name for a prized purple flower used to make a favored style of lei.

MM: What inspires your designs?

Maile: Mo’olei scarf designs are inspired by Hawai’i’s breathtaking color schemes that nature provides. Each piece is individually hand dyed with batik or natural Hawaiian dyes in stream water, sun dried, hand cut and then fashioned into one of several designs. I wish to inspire a lifestyle of simplicity and sustainability as this is my way of life.  In light of this I only use recycled and upcycled t-shirts to fashion each scarf. Each shirt is dyed in the stream water that feeds into my home workshop, and dried on the line in my backyard.  All of my Mo’olei designs are named after the type of lei which it resembles and has a mo’olelo or story to accompany each piece.

Maile lei is a ruffle scarf lei that can be worn open, tied, as a belt or head scarf. This scarf lei resembles a maile lei, which is worn open ended.

I find great importance in comfort as well as fashion and so Mo’olei scarves are made from light cotton t-shirts, allowing them to be breathable, but when doubled it provides warmth.  All of my designs can be worn in at least three different ways making it the finishing touch in casual as well as formal settings.

throw net scarf

Ho’olei is a poncho that is fashioned to resemble a throw net used by Hawaiian lawai’a (fishermen).

MM: Tell me about your background.

Maile: I’m a Maui girl from Lahaina, I graduated from Lahainaluna and worked there as a Hawaiian Immersion teacher, and was the MC for the Old Lahaina Lu’au from 2000-2007. I moved to Molokai when my husband, a Moloka’i cowboy asked me to marry him.  I have been a hula practitioner for over 30 years and a speaker and educator of ‘Olelo Hawai’i, the Hawaiian language, for 20 years. I was raised in a family of artists and raise my children surrounded by the arts coupled with the Hawaiian language and practices as well.

haku lei maui hawaii molokai scarf cotton

The Haku lei is a scarf lei with three rows of braids, and is named after the traditional style of lei making that involves braiding in different flowers and ferns.

MM: Where can you find Mo’olei? Where might people have seen them before?

Maile: I have some pieces at Native Intelligence in Wailuku and my own web store. My sister sells my pieces at the Maui Hyatt Regency as well every Friday in the Lobby. I will also be at the Made in Maui County Festival in November at the MACC.  In the past, I was a featured designer at MAMo (Maoli Arts Month) at the Bishop  Museum and I’ve sold the scarves at the Merrie Monarch Festival.

A Whole New HUE

Maui is a world-class destination for a lot of things, but shopping? Not so much.  Sure we have cute little boutiques, and bikini shopping that is noteworthy, but for anything for the home, choices have been pretty limited – that was, until two talented young interior designers saw this void, and have been filling it, with gorgeous pillows, comfy yet stylish couches, handy hostess gifts and much more! Wendy Takemoto and Jessica Guard McLellan decided to open up HUE, a furniture and lifestyle store, and the results?  Well, they’ve been stunning.

maui furniture store best home furnishings“We were designers before we were in retail, and it was never possible to find pieces in our style on-island,” Jessica explained. “We knew other people must also be feeling that need. So we thought rather than ordering from mainland stores, why not open our own?”  And Maui shoppers heartily agreed, voting them Best New Business in 2013 and Best Home Furnishings in 2014 in the Maui Time Weekly’s Best of Maui readers’ poll.

maui furniture store best home furnishingsIn 2012, Wendy and Jessica opened HUE at their original retail and design space on Kahului’s Lalo Avenue.  Not quite two years later, with a good idea of what island shoppers were looking for, Wendy and Jessica jumped at the chance to move to a much larger space in an established location.  They are now located at the former Latitudes, as the anchor for a whole design center, with The Garden, supplying silk flowers, plants and arrangements, by Latitudes’ former purveyors, and Suda Shades, creating custom window treatments.

The new location is approximately 5,000 square feet, triple the size of their former location.  “Our goal is to have the island’s premiere home and lifestyle shop, and this new space brings us one step closer. We now can present an even wider range of carefully curated home and gift items” Jessica continued.  HUE is still Maui’s exclusive dealer for Lee Industries’ furniture, they have added a few new luxury furniture lines, including Lexington and Palecek, and have brought in some more affordable options as well. HUE is constantly adding to their inventory to offer fresh pieces for shoppers, with containers arriving monthly, and smaller shipments arriving even more frequently.

coastal tropical modern design aqua In addition to furniture, HUE is expanding their bed and bath collection, and offers a wide range of home accessories and gifts, including tabletop accessories, hostess gifts, jewelry, soaps and lotions, eco-friendly wrapping paper, coffee table books, lighting and more.  “We travel to the mainland two to three times a year for furniture and gift markets,” shared Wendy. “It’s the best way for us to see what’s current, to get the best possible pricing from our manufacturers, and to check out the quality of the pieces before we order.  We also get a lot of our inspiration when we travel to market. We love seeing other shops in cities like Los Angeles, San Francisco, New York, North Carolina… It’s just good to see stores that aren’t ALL rattan and tropical.”

In addition to offering what’s trending across the country, HUE offers many locally made items including bags by True Story Company and Tiger Lily, compass watches by Pandeia, body products by Queen Bee Productions, jewelry by Kachi, Sophie Grace Maui, Jasmine Honey Designs and Salty Luxe Hawaii, pillows by BlueJane Maui, and eco-friendly wrapping paper by Wrappily. Featured Maui-based artists include Abigail Romanchak, Robert Suzuki and Dane Ward.

According to HUE’s Sales and Marketing Manager, Birgitte Golden, giving back to the Maui community is an important part of the business as well. “We sponsor and donate to many non-profit events, and even assist event design, like at the Pacific Cancer Foundation’s Kama’aina Christmas for the past two years. We also participate in other fundraisers, like the Lee Industries’ Lee Loves America campaign, with a portion of sales going to a local non-profit.” Birgitte continued that, “another great aspect of HUE is that it is locally-owned and operated – Aloha is engrained in who we are, and all customers are met with a down-to-earth, no pressure attitude.” All five team members are born and raised in Hawaii. In addition to Wendy, Jessica and Birgitte, the team includes Design Associate Heather Guard and Warehouse Manager Chris Auna.

Wendy and Jessica also offer professional services including residential and commercial interior design, kitchen and bath design, architectural computer renderings, and more.  Appointments are recommended for design services.

As I chatted with Wendy and Jessica about their new space, I asked what they’ve learned so far in their foray into retail, and what surprises have come up along the way. “Our eyes have really been opened to how shipping affects the costs of goods,” explained Wendy.  “Also, people sometimes don’t fully understand that we are on an island in the middle of the ocean…things take longer to get here, and cost a little more.  As Jessica shares, “mainly, retail is a lot of work. And it’s a different beast in this era with online shopping, Facebook, Pinterest, Instagram….it takes a lot more to stay ahead of the game, but these are also very powerful marketing tools if you know how to use them.”

And speaking of social media – you can follow HUE here: on Facebook, Pinterest and Instagram

Mother’s Day Gift Guide and Makeover Giveaway!

Normally for these Gift Guides I’ll spend a little time shopping around, but for this guide I decided to check with the experts. I interviewed some of Maui’s busiest (and most successful!) moms to see what THEY were eyeing for Mother’s Day.

mei li autumn beauty makeover contestWe’re also announcing a Mommy Makeover Giveaway!  MeiLi Autumn, of MeiLi Autumn Beauty, is giving away a Makeover session to one lucky Maui mommy!  The winner will be picked on Mother’s Day!

“Since becoming a mom 14 months ago, I’ve noticed my beauty regime has pretty much gone out the window,” MeiLi shared.  “Most days I’m lucky to have my teeth brushed let alone a full face of makeup, perfectly blow dried hair, and a (clean) matching ensemble. For Mother’s Day, I’d love to extend a gift to one lucky Maui mama to help her feel as beautiful as she really is. You give so much to your child, your spouse, your job and obligations. It is easy to neglect yourself and go weeks, months even without doing something 100% for you! This is your chance. I’m offering a full-on beauty makeover to help one special mama look and feel her very best. Whether it’s a date night with the hubby, family pictures, or just a fun night out with the girls, this makeover will put a little sparkle and glamour in her life.

“To enter, ‘Like’ the Facebook page “MeiLi Autumn Beauty” and leave a post saying one physical attribute you like about yourself. Me? I think I have been blessed with pretty good skin. I have my own Mom to thank for that. Looking forward to spending my 2nd ever Mother’s Day eating delicious food (that I didn’t have to cook), and spending quality time with my favorite people on earth.”

My son Trenton, 13, is going to be a freshman at Seabury next year! He’s active in sports, and plays the piano. I’m really enjoying my time with him these last couple of years. He’s becoming an amazing young man and I really adore him.  My daughter Dillon is the spitfire of the family at 4 years old. She loves playing with dirt and princesses equally. She keeps us laughing with her witty sense of humor.”

Wendy’s wish for Mother’s Day is for her husband to remember about the holiday!  “He’s from South Africa, so its very possible for it to go right over his head.  But, if he does remember, I want him to take me to a restaurant where he actually had to call ahead and make a reservation, like (2)Mama’s Fish House. From my son, I would like a Mother’s Day edition of the Montessori of Maui (3)macaroni necklace.” When she’s not busy at HUE, Wendy likes to spend time with her family at the beach or camping. For Mother’s Day, though, if I am being completely honest, I’d love to sit uninterrupted on a quiet beach, perhaps thumb through a magazine or just take the time to listen to my thoughts. Going surfing with the family would be a close second, ideally in a cute new bikini from Letarte or (1)Otaheite (in photo, an Acacia design- carried at Otaheite). If there was a pair of Jasmine Honey earrings to match, well that’d be swell. What to Wear for a Wedding in Hawaii – The Maui Made Edition

What to wear wedding hawaii beach island

Our last blog post on weddings was all the unique venues that Maui has to offer.  Today’s post is about trends in bridal attire, and if you thought there were lots of choices for venues- there are even more for bridal gowns- because since we are in Hawaii, the sky is the limit!  And as usual, the below offerings are designed or made right here on the island of Maui!

Maui Made checked in with our go-to stylist, MeiLi Autumn, to see what’s trending with Hawaiian bridal gown styles in 2014:  “Maui brides run the gamut of adhering to a traditional style to having a unique style that is more beachy and casual,” MeiLi shared.

(Above dresses by Maui-based clothing designer Tamara Catz, hair and makeup by MeiLi Autumn.  Photography by Maui Creative Photography)

“Instead of the fluffy, lacy merengue dresses, I am seeing more elegant and streamline dresses that could almost pass as a simple sun dress. Of course there are special embellishments when you look closely like a perfectly placed crystal, or shell detail. I think Maui is special in that brides can really experiment with their style whether its an all-out Victorian extravaganza at the Haiku Mill or a bohemian beachy soiree on the sand.”

Where to find these beautiful gowns? Tamara Catz offers several different wedding gowns, available online and in their flagship store in Paia.

Beach Wedding Attire Tips: If you are having a beach wedding, there are a few things to keep in mind as you plan your attire.  “Maui tends to be pretty windy, and on an exposed beach, veils and layers of fabric can tend to get caught up in our cooling trade winds,” explained Melissa Padilla of Opihi Love Wedding and Event Design.  “And if you are on the beach, stiletto heals aren’t going to work, so stick with wedges, or some brides will go with slippers (flip-flops) or even barefoot!” she continued.  (Melissa is the designer of some of Maui’s dreamiest weddings, check out her brand-new website here

Bridal Gown by Tamara Catz

And for the bride who is looking to do something completely out of the box, with just a nod to the traditional, Maui Girl has just unveiled its line of Bridal Bikinis– handmade here on Maui!  According to Debbie Wilson, owner and designer of Maui Girl, “we’ve been looking to create a line of bridal inspired suits for a while, it just seems so fitting with all the destination weddings that come to Maui.  We were looking for an alternative to a white t-shirt with lifesavers and puffy paints for a beach or pool-side bachelorette party, plus we loved the idea of doing a bridal inspired photo-shoot!  Now we are just waiting for that island-hip bride to have all her bridesmaids in bikinis, and her in a full gown. How awesome would that be!?”

Valentine’s Gift Suggestion #1- Awili Spa at Andaz

Let’s just say you have a lovely wife, with two kids, who could use a little pampering and quiet time.  I’m about to make your wife (and life) very happy.  Present her with a day at the Awili Spa at the new Andaz hotel in Wailea for Valentine’s Day.   From the friendly greeting by the complementary valet, to the dramatic, but simple entry and non-lobby lobby, your princess will feel like a real princess.  (I wish I had fancier words to describe how wonderful the Andaz is, but all I can say is this – just go.  Even to just walk around, grab a drink at the poolside Lehua Lounge during sunset, or enjoy a full meal at one of their several spectacular restaurants).

Entry to Heaven… The Andaz Maui at Wailea

An unexpected little room in the hotel ‘lobby’ – a zen garden with a sand floor!

Back to the Valentine’s gift – included with treatments at the spa is access to the sauna, steam room and hot tub in the spa area, snacks (which are worth staying for alone) in the spa’s lounges, and access to the adult-only tranquility pool.  I had the good fortune to be able to get a massage at the spa recently, and the whole experience is so magical, that while being shown around the spa area, my guests and I kept giggling at our disbelief that we could spend the whole day there… ( “we close at 8pm, so you can stay until 7:59” we were told with a smile, we giggled again).   The hot tub room (with steam room, sauna, and very well appointed showers and locker room) is just a really relaxing area on its own, I can only describe as modern and zen-like.  The massage was one of the best I’ve ever had.   The entrance to the spa is also a fun area, you are surrounded by hundreds of drawers of herbs and other magical ingredients for the apothecary consultants to brew up cures for whatever ails you.

Also in the entry/apothecary room is an unexpected boutique filled with designs from Maui’s top clothing and fashion designers, including clothing by Maggie Coulumbe and jewelry by Debbie Mack and Sophie Grace.  This spot is worth a stop just for the shopping.

Sadly, though we were not able to stay until 7:59 (due to one daddy staying at home with all four children) – we did have time to enjoy a delicious meal at the Lehua Lounge, with a stunning view of the humpbacks breaching in the ocean.  A momentous end to a thoroughly  relaxing day.
