Paia Update- August 2015

I went away for two weeks in July, and upon returning, it seemed like there was a whole flurry of activity in Paia!  New shops had opened, other shops had moved, restaurants are closing and opening, and the construction boom is still in full force!

Here’s a run down of what’s new in Paia:

SHOPS

Congratulations to Christine and Tim Thevenard on the opening of their beautiful new shop Luna and Tide (website still under construction but has contact info)  – this shop is worth the entry just to see their gorgeous floors. I popped my head in when I was cruising around town with a four year old (who is not much for shopping) so I will have to go back and check out the shop soon solo. Plus they have my favorite Robena painting. According to Christine, “Luna & Tide is a new Paia store filled with gifts, art and home decor.  Many of the products that are sold here support and give back to the world artisans communities were they are from.  We are looking forward to working with more local artisan as well. Please come in to visit!”

A shop that is no longer in Paia is the custom swimwear shop ‘Love the Beach (and I believe she’s still making custom suits but I’m trying to confirm this!)- the space is now called The Mermaid Inn, and shares that same owners as the neighboring Paia Mercantile.  More on the Mermaid Inn coming soon…

I can’t keep track of where everyone has been or is going, but it appears that Nectar Creations is now in the former Hemp House location and Original Kashmir (which appears to be a kind of import store with all kinds of crystals, jewelry and of course, cashmere) has taken its place along Hana Highway.

RESTAURANTS

New Construction

And the ongoing construction in Paia seems to be, well, ongoing.  Want more information about leasing space in Paia?  Click here.

And once again, if you are reading all the way down here, you must be really bored.  So take a ride with me. Do you know what’s a fun website to check out? Craigslist.  And no, I don’t mean the Missed Connections, although they are often hilarious.  I mean Job Postings. For example, there is currently an ad for help wanted for Honolulu Coffee Company in Paia.  Is this a new business coming in? Or does Honolulu Coffee Company run one of the existing coffee shops? Well, a quick search of Honolulu Coffee Company shows that yes, indeed, they actually own Anthony’s.

Liven things up with a Trip to Dazoo – Paia’s Newest Restaurant

For year’s now it’s been the same thing on nights when neither of us feel like cooking.  “Flatbread or Cafe Des Amis?” Well finally, a new restaurant has worked its way into the rotation – Dazoo.

The long tables are perfect for a large family or dining with all your friends!

Dazoo Restaurant, which just opened earlier this month at the former Moana Cafe location, features locally-grown ingredients with eclectic Asian-American cuisine, highlighted with Korean favorites.  Owners Yulie and David Law, who purchased Moana Cafe over a year ago, spent the last several months designing the new restaurant, including a revised menu and extensive renovation, creating a modern new space with a warm, inviting atmosphere.

(Sidebar: They are having a Photo Contest!!! If you are dining at Dazoo between now and December 15, (or even just walking by!) snap a picture and enter their Photo Contest for a chance to win dinner for two, and two Dazoo logo t-shirts!  See complete rules on Dazoo’s Facebook Page. )

Dazoo is open daily from 8am to 2pm for breakfast and lunch, and Tuesdays through Saturdays for dinner, from 5pm to 9pm.

The Korean Specialty – Bibimbap – keeps customers coming back!

The breakfast (served until 2pm!) and lunch menu features traditional dishes such as eggs and french toast, a seasonal roasted pumpkin salad, and some Korean specialties such as Bibimbap and Ramyeon.  Starting at 10am, burgers (made from Maui Cattle Company beef) and sandwiches are also available.

Dazoo’s dinner menu features a wide variety of tapas, ideal for sharing and sampling various dishes.

One of the most visible changes of the new Dazoo is the enhanced bar area, where hand-crafted cocktails take center stage.  Created by their in-house mixologist Jimmy Shoemaker, these fresh and inspired cocktails are served up by bartenders day and night.  Another unique offering at Dazoo are the Bald Sodas – non-alcoholic beverages featuring muddled fruit and sparkling water, a perfect refreshing beverage that’s not too sweet.

But what is ‘Dazoo’?  Owner Yulie explains the origin of the name: “while we were designing the new restaurant, we created these sculptural animals  to hang from the ceiling, and our architect kept referring to the project as ‘the zoo’.  We pidginized the phrase, and the more we said it, the more it stuck.  It has a bit of an Asian sound, so it ties in with our theme, and its 100% original, so it works for us.”

Another exciting development is the development of a stand-alone bakery, which will be in the old Vanity Salon location. The Moana Bakery will be serving fresh artisan breads and pastries, each created daily with organic, unbleached flour.  The Bald Sodas will also be available to-go in to go bottles at the bakery.

The tapas and imaginative cocktails create a fun and memorable dining experience.

If you haven’t made any Thanksgiving Day plans yet, Dazoo will be offering a prix-fixe three-course dinner from 3-8pm. Each course of the meal will have 2-3 options, each  based on traditional Thanksgiving classics, served with locally-sourced ingredients and some Korean twists. $45 for adults, with optional wine pairings and Children’s Menus available. Seating with be limited and reservations are limited – Call (808) 579-9999 or reserve through OpenTable.com/Dazoo

Paia Inn – Something is happening upstairs, but no official word yet. Will keep you posted!

Paia Inn Construction

Any idea what’s happening upstairs?

Under Construction:

Rock & Brews – Here are some excerpts from the company’s website:  “We are a casual family friendly restaurant, where families bring their grandparents and children to enjoy the indoor dining and open air patio. We pride our brand on friendly service, with an emphasis being on the great food menu and dining experience. We are not a live music venue, the background music heard is recorded and volume control is fully monitored. We plan to offer 52 beers on draft  and our signature Mai Tai and Margarita.  Our interior decor will honor the Hawaiian culture on Maui with materials found on the island and artwork from locals.  We consulted with a local artist to act as our Hawaiian Art and Cultural consultant, to make sure we respected the local traditions and cultures.

We have hired all local workers from the contractor to all sub-contractors.  We will also be incorporating all local produce and protein vendors in our menu from Maui.  In addition, the family owners have added additional stalls to the restrooms to accommodate needed facilities for the visitors to Hana via Paia. ”

The New Rock And Brews Location - Under Construction

The New Rock And Brews Location – Under Construction

Opened:

San Lorenzo- See this post for more info!

New Parking Lots – If its been a really long time since you’ve been to Paia, you’ll want to know about the parking situation.  The dirt lot behind Charlie’s is paved and Paid Parking.  You need to enter by Charlie’s and exit onto Baldwin.  If you are heading to Mana Foods with two kids, believe me, the dollar or two is worth it.  I asked one time at Mana if they cared if I left the cart in the paid lot and they didn’t.  They apparently go looking all over town for them… So, ditch away.  If you aren’t traveling with small kids in tow, there’s also a new FREE dirt parking lot up Baldwin Avenue near the Post Office.

Closed:

Hemp House – Bummer.

Painted:

The wall near the Chevron – by the awesome artist Robena.  Ok, I’d been hearing about this wall for weeks and never figured out where it was until recently.  If you are driving through Paia towards Kahului, when you pass Hana Bay Picnic Lunch, or whatever that place is called with the amazing smoothies, really quickly look right (towards the ocean) – its on that wall next to the Sand & Sea.  If you are walking by, head down the side street to take a look – It’s really stunning in person.   Robena is also currently one of the Four Seasons Maui’s artists-in-residence.  You can meet Robena at the hotel (in Wailea)  on Saturdays: 8am – 1pm
