Tiger Rose – A New Line of Handbags Designed on Maui

I went to a holiday party last month and met someone who was telling me all about her friend’s new line of bags designed on Maui, called Tiger Rose.  And what did I see the next day at not one but two of the shops I was doing my gift shopping at?  Tiger Rose.  What were my mainland guests swooning over as we went out shopping?  Tiger Rose.  So my friends – here’s the scoop.  You need (at least) one of these.

Tiger Rose’s designer, Maile Bongolan, shares some incite into her new company:

Maui Made: When and how did you start Tiger Rose?

Maile Bongolan: Tiger Rose was launched in the fall of 2013. I’ve always had a love for textiles and traveling so these handbags are sort of a reflection of the two. I plan to visit other areas of the world and incorporate indigenous fabrics into my products.

MM: What sets your bags apart from other handmade bags?

MB: In this current line, the fabric used on our handbags is handwoven, traditional Ikat fabric from Indonesia. The fabric itself is a work of art. It takes up to a week for a piece of fabric to be woven. Each bag is one-of-a-kind, and they all feature quality, eco-friendly dyed leather and solid brass hardware.

MM: What’s your top selling product so far?

MB: The top selling product this season has been the Uluwatu Wallet Purse (available in four color/pattern options). It’s a small on-the-go zip purse with 4 credit card slots in the main compartment. It features whip-stitch leather detail on the edges and zips shut with a cute leather tassel. It’s perfect to throw in your beach bag or take on a night out. It fits comfortably your credit card/ID, cell phone, wallet and keys – pretty much all you need.

MM: Where can people buy Tiger Rose Bags?

MB: On Maui, they are currently in Collections in Makawao, Om Maui Fitness Studio in Pukalani, The Bikini Market in Kihei, and Hue in Kahului.   The bags are also for sale on my website as well at

MM: Is this your full time job?

MB: This is currently a part-time job with full time dedication 🙂 I’m a graphic designer as well so that is my full time job. But this is something I plan to expand on over the years and hope to soon be my full time job.

MM: What’s next for Tiger Rose?

This is part two of the shopping guide / virtual tour of Paia  – Enjoy!  Click here to see Part 1 –

Paia Inn – If you are looking for a hip, boutique hotel in an urban, beach-front setting, this is it.  Opened in 2008, this 5 room hotel was built in 1927, and believed to have been used as a small Japanese hotel when Paia was a bustling plantation town.  Two more cottages offer oceanfront and ocean-view accommodations.   In addition to artwork by Avi Kiriaty,  each guest room feature wireless internet, flat screen TVs with cable, A?C, private travertine tiled bathrooms, salon quality amenities, and fully-stocked mini bars.

Imrie Pippa, Tamsin, Caitlin and Lola Imrie, three sisters and their mother, opened their first shop in Westhampton Beach, NY in 2008, and the following year opening the Paia shop.  The shops offer a unique blend of the girls own designs together with outside labels, creating a closet for your every need. Imrie’s broad spectrum of price, style, color and texture, is all graced with that undefinable signature Imrie style.

Flatbread Co.- This place only serves up two things, salads and flatbread pizzas, but it does them well.  They specialize in using fresh, local ingredients, and cook the flatbreads on a huge brick oven in the middle of the restaurant.  Oh yeah, they have beer and dessert too.  Go early, there’s always a wait around peak dinner hours.

Tamara Catz – This gorgeous boutique carries even more gorgeous clothes, designed by Maui-based clothing designer Tamara Catz.  She’s known for her contemporary resort clothing, as well as wedding gowns and bathing suits. Also features locally designed jewelry.

Paia Contemporary Gallery-  Established in 2007, the gallery focuses exclusively in mixed media artists from the abstract contemporary art world, emanating from the American abstract Expressionism genre.

Art Project Paia- This brand new gallery was founded by Tatiana Botton as a multidisciplinary gallery that offers a fresh and contemporary perspective to the art shown on Maui.  Art Project: Paia represents up and coming and established international, mainland and local artists with a distinct Hawaiian sensitivity.

Maui Crafts Guild – Maui’s only artist owned and operated cooperative gallery – featuring 100% locally hand-crafted art.

Aloha Bead Shop – a jeweler’s dream!

Paia Bay Coffee – haven’t been in here yet, but I bet they serve coffee…

Puka Puka – This boutique and art gallery carries unique objects, jewelry, fashion, fine art and limited-edition prints, all with a surfer vibe.
